American Airlines first to offer iPhone mobile boarding passes

In what will no doubt be the first among several who will offer this (it’s about time!), American Airlines is now the first airline to officially offer mobile boarding passes at a few airports but it shouldn’t take long for this to be available at all airports, across all airlines. Perhaps a few years, but it will happen.

iPhone Boarding Pass

According to reports on several sites, attempts to show an iPhone as a boarding pass at the gate never has worked. People were told that was not approved so a paper version had to be shown. For those who travel frequently, it’s obviously more convenient to show your iPhone screen rather than looking in your backpack for the right piece of paper.

Is this the wave of the future? More than likely. American Airlines started to make this mobile boarding pass option available to people who travel from Chicago O’Hare Airport, LAX, and John Wayne Airport, and it is leading the way for all other airlines. More airlines will probably follow in the near future, and it’s yet another example of the iPhone’s penetration into the everyday consciousness of business.

Wonder why they only made an app for the iPhone? I would think that there would be more corporate flyers who need this carrying Blackberrys, at least for now.

Love the idea, but how is the TSA screening done? I don’t want a TSA guy to sign/stamp my iPhone after checking my ID.

  5. [...] the LH app is really good with lots of possibilities for enhancement (sorry) improvement. (see the AA online boarding pass support for the iPhone) __________________ Join the 1st Franconian DO: NUE, June 12-14 [...]

I just traveled, American Airlines, Dallas to Cleveland and back.
I had a paper boarding pass with me on the way from Dallas to Cleveland, so didn’t get the chance to use the IPhone app.
Coming back from Cleveland though, at security, they had a reader that I set my IPhone screen on, and it read the info, they then compared that with my ID (drivers license).
At the gate, I just expanded the IPhone boarding pass so she could read the info, as she said the “reader” wasn’t working. She then verified that with my “checked in” name on her computer.
Very new, so seems there are kinks still
