Another iPhone “killer”: The Verizon Motorola Droid phone info released

Based on the advertisements for the phone (hinted at with ads this weekend), it appears Verizon and Motorola are taking full aim at the iPhone with their Droid phone, and they’re pulling very few punches.

Motorola Droid

This handset will come with the Android 2.0 OS and was a joint effort between Google and Motorola, and Boy Genius Report is saying its “the most impressive phone we’ve used since the iPhone”. That’s pretty high praise indeed. Android has really need a strong phone to help propel itself into the marketplace, after the HTC effort was met with middling sales.

Its rumored to be only slightly thicker than an iPhone, with a slide-out physical keyboard, but the hardware isn’t totally final yet, so this could change. It will come with speedy internal hardware.

The handset will come packaged with a charging cradle that will transform the phone into a media center, with weather, time and other data displayed.

Android 2.0 in general will be launched soon (after some delay) and will include a new Maps feature, a much improved browser (and much needed), and built-in Exchange and Facebook support as well.

This phone hasn’t been announced, and probably won’t be released until early 2010. But it sounds like this may be the first legitimate iPhone competitor yet, based on early reviews.

If you go look at the website droiddoes.com there is a timer at the bottom that expires the 30th of oct so it is more than likely to come out this month. Not only that but the verizon commercial says novmeber on it. Just letting you know.

Just bc the hardware is similar and it has an extra external keyboard doesn’t make it even come close to being an iPhone killer. The pre was exactly the same. There is nothing new here. Nothing that says I’m state of the art. I give it a “Meh”

I love that a phone has to be compared to an IPhone to get attention from the dim portion of our society that follows around IPhone like it’s something sent from God himself. So instead of typing your one sided reviews that show you clearly haven’t tried anything else but an IPhone, why don’t you use your Mac computer and your Free internet from the Starbucks your most likely sitting in, and try searching up originality on Google. I know most of the big words will confuse you, but that’s what a Thesaurus is for. (if you don’t know what that is, try using Google to find out… and since you’ll be using Google so much, why don’t you just get a Verizon Motorola Droid phone, which is powered by Google)

I can see already in the new pic’s that they really havent even made any effort towards high res buttons on home screen< dont know how it really responds to finger movements or even if it can handle muti finger actions but i can say for sure that apple is here for a reason, omg a nightscreen 5mp camera, go get a nice nikon if u want that but if ur looking for performance, reliability and overall greatness,IPHONE IT!!

    i dont get it.
why do thay want to BEAT the iphone instat thay just be original about it.

let the iphone me iphone and dont try to beat it even if droiddoes beat it. dont be kiddy and screw up other phones i havent seen a ad that wanted to destroy the HTC HD or touch pro 2 xperia and more phones.

create a phone that is just original with original ads dont be dumb and try to make a compo out of it.

Dude, its not necessarally ALL ABOUT beating your precious little Iphone. i know when you wake wake up with a rageing hard apendage after a dream about your iphone you think that its perfect, and everyone should just get the iphone.

well think of it this way. I have the verizon network. Iphone isnt going to come to me but i want to have as much fun as i can. can i switch services and get the iphone? ya, sure i could do that, but then id be able to text my friends 2,3 times a month before we/they ran out of texts. Not to mention, att’s area of service kinda sucks.

i welcome my droid overlords! WELCOME!

droid is correct in all of its claims, and may be better than the iphone.

right now it seems better than the iphone, and ppl on verizon will be happy. but nobody can out-apple apple. no smartphone will beat the iphone. some nubs just buy something easy and simple without understanding they are locking themselves in. there are too many idiots who buy all itunes music without thinking that if they got anything else than an ipod it wouldnt play. (now it will play, you just have to pay apple again to convert the songs.) they have to send in their ipod/iphone if the battery dies. you dont choose what goes into your mac, all of it will be apple stuff. why do you think ipods didnt have fm radio? apple wanted you to get your music only from them. APPLE LOCKS YOU IN.

so yes, the droid may not be as smooth and pretty as the iphone, but it wont lock you in like apple. but TOO MANY PEOPLE DONT KNOW/CARE ABOUT BEING LOCKED INTO APPLE– apple will always win.

well yes but i got good service here NOT AT&T like in america i see alot of people having trouble with iphone becouse of the sucky service over there but here i got Tmobile and i can take full advantage of the iphone no call drops high speed internet everyware for as i know since i got my contract.

well its a shame that at&t sucks so bad over there as i heared so if i was in that position i would be going to a other carrier as well so you got my vote on that.

You simply can’t “kill” a phone that has a full fledged ipod touch built into it, and an app store with over 100,000 programs available. No hardware or design on Earth will help a phone top the iPhone, because at the end of the day you’re still going to have much much less at your fingertips.

The iPhone is very unique. It’s a forerunner. Apple did something great that naturally drew people to iPhone, just like what iPod did, but now, on a grander scale. No fluff was needed, no hype was needed, no bashing was needed, no convincing was needed. The iPhone spoke for itself, and people fell in love with it. Isn’t that how it should be? I hear a resounding “YESSSS” inside of you…

I’m anti ipod and iphone also. I would never pay for such a high dollar phone that is really not so great, because like other bloggers have said, apple locks you in. iphone users really think highly of themselves. I believe the open source apps of the droid are great. The Google Droid phones are the future, not the iphone. iphone egomaniacs will be around for a while and thats fine. A little competition is good for business. So Droid users let them think they are top Dog. When it comes down to it does it really matter. Enjoy your Verizon Droids…..

Picked up a Droid today and it’s 85-90% of the iPhone. The screen looks better but is touchy and more difficult to type on. The browser is indeed slower but better than anything else I’ve played with. I also used a Storm 2 for a few hours and hated it. The real difference is that it’s not on AT&T’s network.

    Droid + Verizon > iPhone + AT&T > Storm 2 + any network

If Verizon had the iPhone there wouldn’t even be a comparison.

p.s. I did have an iPhone and loved it.

I have at&t and have great service 2 dropped calls and nothing but 3g speed every place i have gone with my iphone, but las vegas. But i found a remedy to fix my signal when i leave a location that my phone gets it’s signal from the cell towers. In my location where i live, the cell tower is down the street. I get full bars at home and at work. Also just about everywhere else. So if you get a cheap signal where you live, It is not the network, it is the placement of cell phone towers in your area. Long live 3G

for those of you, who say that the iphone would be better on any other carrier than at&t… then get an iphone and use your carrier with prepaid sim card. it’s not hard at all. how do you think people all over the world have iphones… i’m just making an observation and stating the obivous solution. thanks
