Apple hints at possible “battle” with Palm?

Here’s what Apple current leader Tim Cook just said about iPhone competition: “We like competition as long as they don’t rip off our IP. And we’re going to go after anybody that does.” Are they talking about the recently announced Palm Pre? Read on.

Palm Pre

Analyst asks Tim if he’s talking about Palm, since the Pre has some very iPhoney elements, like multitouch. Steve, remember, made a point of saying at the iPhone announcement they have patented that technology.

He won’t directly answer the question, but…Tim’s not subtle reply: “I’m making a general statement…We will not stand for having our IP ripped off,” and Apple will use any “weapons at our disposal.” Uh oh, it does sound like a possible battle brewing between the two companies. He won’t come right out and say it, but the veiled implication is obvious.

Palm has better watch themselves for a little while. iPhone is one Apple’s top cash cows, and any direct threat to that (or their “technology”) will send their legal team into action.

I love it!!! Apple is finally getting all the recognition as a villianous, greedy, self serving company it ALWAYS has been. From their “oh, we’re the little guy who loves to help the people, Microsoft is evil” BS lines to now “Don’t touch our stuff or try to use it better or we’ll sue you into non-existance” hmm….monopoly anyone?? Maybe if Jobs can get his sorry @$$ out of the hospital or where ever he is, he should go before the trade commission…

Why is it villainous to patent real technology like multi-touch? I’m all for stopping stupid patents, especially in the ambiguous areas of software, but multi-touch has a compelling patent case.

Palm holds quite a few PDA/Smartphone patents themselves that they have enforced in the past.
