The application tool Movies2iPhone uses a widely licensed video conversion engine, besides sporting a drop-dead simply interface. In order to convert a file, you first need to select and simply drag files to iTunes and synchronize.

Details indicate that iPhone can playback H.264 video at throughput rates up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second. Moreover, the Baseline Profile is up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz and stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. This however, concludes that videos in other formats (including AVI) have to be converted, to ensure that it is properly synced to the device via iTunes, before being played.

Speaking of conversion, users of Mac have the opportunity to use the magnificent freeware utility called ‘iSquint’, which conveniently converts an array of video formats to iPhone-compatible versions. There are also reports of a recent development, which reveals plans to add a feature for involuntarily moving converted content to the iPhone.

Similarly, there is also provision for setting DVD movies on the iPhone with a free Mac OS X/Windows utility called HandBrake. The function of this utility is to slash videos from DVDs and save them in different formats, which include MP4 files to be played by the iPhone/iPod Touch. This again can be updated to create iPhone-compatible full size anamorphic video.

The process is simple – after inserting the desired DVD into your computer’s optical drive, you need to download HandBrake and launch the application. After the HandBrake saves the resulting .MP4 file, wait until the video has been saved. Then you choose the MP4 file created by HandBrake, connect your iPhone/iPod Touch, and select it in iTunes. The movie is now stored on your iPhone/iPod Touch and accessible for viewing.
