AT&T is reported to be bolstering the development of its 3G network in various areas in preparation for the iPhone launch, according to CNET’s Buzz Out Loud podcast. A listener of the show claimed that AT&T is presently ramping up its 3G network in Pittsburg to ensure that their fast wireless service is ready to take on iPhone clients by May.

The Pittsburgh-based audience member implied that the iPhone launch would also take place around May, which would contradict analysts’ estimates and predictions that have called for iPhone to appear by June.

Although this rumor is not yet verified, it is noteworthy for AT&T’s practices based on the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. The company pursued its “Operation Fine

Edge”, wherein the company upgraded its baseline quality and reach of the slower, EDGE-based data network a few months before the June 29th release of iPhones last year. 3G improvements would be a likely occurrence with AT&T to ensure their network could handle a dramatic influx of new users while eliminating weak spots in their existing coverage.

AT&T publicly announced that they would complete a “major expansion of 3G service” nationwide this year, though the company has not issued a specific timetable or even connected this endeavor to the iPhone launch or any specific devices.

However, AT&T chief Ralph de la Vega said earlier this month “all smart devices will be 3G-capaable within the next few months”, but denied implications behind this statement.
