Can you unlock your 3G iPhone?

Few more weeks and the second-generation iPhone will be on the market. And since Steve Jobs officially announced that there will be a 3G iPhone, many iPhone fanatics have sold their first-generation iPhone hoping that they could buy a new one and get their hands on the latest iPhone. Moreover, these iPhone fanatics are also hoping that they would be able to unlock it.

3G iPhone

Unfortunately, the company made several great measures that would prevent the users from unlocking the device. Why? First of all if you would be purchasing the latest 3G iPhone, you must (meaning you have no other choice) sign a contract with the AT&T at their store. But the rumors about the in-store activation are already gone. However, customers must activate their 3G iPhone within thirty days or they will have to pay a penalty. Others who just want to have the 3G iPhone, not the AT&T service, suggested that they cancel the contract with AT&T, unlock the 3G iPhone and pay for the termination fee worth $175. However, the AT&T would first require you to surrender your 3G iPhone before that contract can be cancelled.

But if you are really desperate to unlock a 3G iPhone, why not think outside the box, or better yet outside the country. In places like Australia, there are laws that prevent the mobile service providers from binding a customer to a mobile phone contract. Therefore, you may opt to travel to Australia or have someone buy it for you and then ship it to United States so that you can have an unlocked 3G iPhone.

Not so….ETF is to compensate for subsidized price of handset. That’s why they give a 30 days windows to surrender phone without incurring ETF. after 30 days pay whatever ETF and the handset is yours.
