“Carrier Update” for iPhone snuck out via iTunes

Apple today is pushing down a “Carrier Update” via iTunes. As usual, explanations are scant to none. Rumors are this has something to do with the tethering options for AT&T, and it updates the carrier section of the phone to version 3.1.

Carrier Update

Based on comments from other sites, it does possibly update tethering capability, and it may require you to power cycle your iPhone for it to work properly. In a few cases, it required a re-activation of phones, so be careful after using this update.

Apple seems to be fond of sneaking out updates of late, rather than announcing them formally or in press releases. They haven’t been quite this secretive about releases before, so it seems odd for Apple, and a little out of character.

Have any of our users here at iPhonesTalk gotten the update yet? Noticed any differences or had problems?

I ran the update.. No problems.. The phone, email, sms, etc.. all work. Haven’t noticed anything different. Then again I haven’t really looked and I do not have the 3G phone.

    Cheers

It secretly updates the baseband from the unlockable .28 to the non-unlockable .30
They said it ads some carrier logo junk, but what it really does is re-lock all the unlocked iphone 3g’s. That’s why there was no major announcement about it.

Updated to-day on my 3Gs. Used to use Nokia on Vodafone and signal was very good but not now on O2. Their coverage map say’s my area should be very good so I wonder if it’s the iPhone as many blogs suggest. Anyway, every 2 minutes I get the message my carrier is missing and do I want to change to Vodafone, T-mobile or Orange????? Explain that one to me?
Like everyone else in the UK, my contract is with O2 as I had no choice. I now see that’s all going to change end of year as well.
