There are a lot of codes available: *3001#123456#* and pressing “Call” starts a field test on your iPhone with results that can be used to find out signal strength, along with other fancy technical stuff only a cell engineer would really understand clearly.

Dialing *646# and pressing “Call” checks your minute balance remaining.

There’s load of other info and codes listed here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10240566-233.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=iPhoneAtlas

It has a wealth of stuff that isn’t widely published that can be pretty useful for everyone.

The iPhone is a powerful device, running a very powerful mobile operating system.

There are over 35,000 apps for the iPhone by now – and many of them offer stunning graphics, effects, and sheer power on a smartphone device.

So it’s hard for some people to admit that the powerful, wonderful iPhone sometimes needs a little help getting through the day. One way to do this – and to help your iPhone get a fresh start on free memory (of the RAM variety, the kind programs use to run, not storage memory) – is to get in the habit of restarting the iPhone once per day. Some people use pride as an excuse not to do this, and it can cost you performance and stability at times.

Lately, especially since moving to the iPhone OS 3.0 betas – we’ve seen that performance suffers noticeably when I let the phone go a few days without a restart. There are more brief freeze-ups within apps, more crashes, and a little more latency in certain apps.

We’re hoping by the time 3.0 has its public release, memory management will be better – in both the OS itself and within apps. We also cannot wait to see Force Quit come back in one of these betas – although I’m still holding out a faint hope that its absence might mean Apple are cooking up something better for memory/processes management. You never know.

But now there’s been a workaround published by Ubuntu users that seems to work pretty well, according to comments all over the web that we’ve read.

The workaround has been published here:

You do need a jailbroken iPhone for this to work, however.

Several sources have found that by typing out a “z,” then touching and dragging to back up the cursor behind it, they could type pretty much anything they wanted.

Typing behind the Z leaves auto-correct unable to guess what word you could possibly be forming—”cabinetz?” it asks, so it leaves you alone.

Works on any iPhone/Touch app that features spelling correction, actually. You could, of course, just turn off Auto-Correction in the Settings/General/Keyboard menu, but this method provides a quick tweak that leaves the correction for the real typos while not slowing you down for other types of work.

In general, the Safari+ bookmarklets offer up the same kind of functionality you’d get in a full-size browser through the magic of specialized JavaScript code. Most are unobtrusive and seamless, and some are quite helpful, forcing mobile Safari to open any link in a new window, for example, or displaying all the photos on a page in a single layout.

Like similarly helpful bookmarklet-powered tools Pastebud and Instapaper, you’ll probably have to manually edit these bookmarks to single out the JavaScript, but it seems worth the point-and-drag effort for certain. It’s a shame Apple didn’t include all of this originally, but hey, developers exist for a reason.

Head to this link in your mobile Safari browser to check it out: http://www.ipuhelin.com/en/safariplus/

Are you looking for good iPhone application recommendations? While you could look at our App Store section to find reviews, you can also head over to a new section on Apple’s website. “iPhone Your Life,” as it’s called, allows you to see applications as they relate to different parts of your life, and what app they would recommend to make the phase of your life easier in some way.

Apple has sections for: Around Town (related to local food and events), World Travel (events and other stuff from around the world), At Home (on the range with family and home related apps), Getting Things Done (productivity apps for business), and Fun and Games (self-explanatory; games for the iPhone are an exploding market right now).

They have staff picks, top downloaded apps, and descriptions of featured applications. It’s an interesting philosophical approach to the everyday use of the smartphone, and the apps recommended are generally the best of the lot.

It’s a good starting place for anyone with an iPhone, especially someone who is new to the world of the device. You can check it out by heading here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-your-life/

iPhone battery isn’t lasting very long? Maybe even just a day? There’s a very simple trick that had worked for many types of systems to ensure you get all the power and speed you paid for: Only use things when you need them. Settings that are set to ‘Auto’ are usually bad news for the power of any system, and that includes the iPhone.

1. Cycle iPhone once a month: Once a month charge your iPhone to 100% and let it run down to 0% percent charge and shutoff. This cycles the lithium battery inside the iPhone. This ensures correct display of your charge status and keeps your battery from having the dreaded ‘memory’, which can degrade its performance.

2. Use limited mail account: Turn off the auto check option for e-mail that you don’t use often. This will not only save the battery but also your iPhone CPU, and allow it to run at top speed.

3. Use auto lock: Set the auto lock at Never and see the effect it has on the battery. This setting really eats away the battery. Set the option at the minimum of 1 minute or 2 minute. This way your phone can get a digital ‘rest’ sometimes, and not constantly have to be checking and drain the battery.

4. Turn off bluetooth when you aren’t using it: If you are not using a bluetooth device such as a headset, shut it off. That saves a good amount of your battery energy.

5. Turn Wi-Fi off: You’re getting the idea by now. When you are not using Wi-Fi, learn to shut the option off in your Settings area.

By following the above steps, you can extend your battery life by as much as 40%.

The iPhone is not just a phone. It is THE smartphone. It does not matter whether you are using the latest iPhone or the iPhone that was launched a year ago. Both iPhones will give you a top-quality mobile phone experience that has a revolutionary touch-screen feature. And when paired with your laptop or desktop computer, it has definitely more to offer.

If you are a first-time smartphone user, here are some ways that would help you synchronize your current iPhone.

Sync your calendar and address book – if you are a Mac user, you will have no problems doing this. Once connected, the iPhone will automatically connect in your Mac’s Address Book, Mail, iCal and even in your Microsoft Entourage.

Sync your Media – but before doing so, you must first install the latest iTunes application then set up the Apple iTunes Store. Both of these must be installed in your computer so that the iTunes will automatically manage your movies, music, and other iPhone application including the mobile games.

Sync your web bookmarks – If you are a Safari browser user, you can easily sync your web bookmarks in your iPhone. Unfortunately, iPhone cannot sync the bookmarks you made on your Firefix or Internet Explorer browser. You have no choice but to install Safari and exports the bookmarks in a file. Afterwards, import it to the Safari so that you can sync your web bookmarks to your iPhone.

When the 3G iPhone was launched, customers were disappointed about the battery life of the device. And for those who would mainly rely on their iPhones whenever they are on the road would not want a device that would easily ran out of battery. So here are some of the things that you can do to prolong the battery life of your 3G iPhone.

Buying a car charge would allow you to charge your iPhone wherever you go. Go to the official site of Apple Inc. and you can find cheap car chrgers for the iPhone. Some would even allow the users to listen to their iPhone music through the car’s speaker.

You might also turn off the 3G, Location, or Wi-Fi on your iPhone when you’re not using it. You might find it bothering to turn these features on and off every time you will use it and stop using it. But hey, it’s an effective way to prolong the battery life of your 3GiPhone.

A bright screen can also consume much of your 3G iPhone’s battery life. And as long as the brightness wasn’t turned down to far, you will not notice anything different in your screen at all.
