Droid Continues to Lose Steam Against the iPhone
It is not taking long for reviewers to pick apart the Droid and they only have themselves to blame. Starting a campaign by stating that this phone is everything that the iPhone is not sets a pretty high bar.

They set themselves up for failure in that everyone was expecting some super phone and what they are really getting is an iPhone copycat with not as many applications.
As has been stated before, there are features on the Droid that are very good and some of them may even be better than the iPhone, but it is simply not enough to warrant changing providers or doubling your cell phone bill. Most people that already have an iPhone are looking at a monthly service bill of at least $150 a month and some are up around the $200 level. That would be an extra $1,800-$2,400 a year to have both phones and it is simply not worth it.
This is just one man’s opinion, but before the Droid took on a giant like the iPhone, they should have had a deeper library of apps to stand behind. While the iPhone had a similar amount when it was first launched, it was a one-of-a-kind and was only competing with the Blackberry as a smart phone. This is the one point that is hammered home time and time again by people that are trying out the Droid. Why change phones to a product that only offers 10% of the apps that the Apple iPhone does?
Droid may one day be a true threat to the success of the iPhone, but that time is not now. If anything, they are further convincing Verizon customers to switch over to AT&T to have a phone that can do anything from translate a baby’s crying picking a good spot to put in a wind turbine as an alternative energy source. Right now, the Droid is simply out of its league.

I think that the DRoid is a good phone, if not completely better than the iphone. The Droid certainly has a great screen, resolution, keyboard and of course Android is a great OS.
First, moving from AT&Suck, the bill hasn’t double, but my service has improved dramatically.
Second, I’ve had both; I prefer the Droid. The Droid may be (currently) slightly rougher around the edges, but I no longer have to deal with the dictatorship that is Apple.
Finally, while the Apple apps out number Droid apps five to one, I found all of the useful (and free) Droid apps I need – instead of ten apps on Apple that all do the same thing poorly.
Sorry fan boys, but Droid is the better platform.
I just got a Droid. I love it… and you can use it for GPS in your car. It is magic.
This is a pretty biased article. It is true that the Android platform doesn’t have the breadth of applications that the iPhone has but how long did it take for the iPhone to get simple features like copy/paste. Even Windows Mobile had copy/paste for years. When the iPhone came out, the Windows Mobile people scoffed and laughed at it and said it was a toy that couldn’t ever take on WM. Guess what? Where is Windows Mobile now? So before you iPhone people(myself included) go on and on about how the Android platform is no challenge to the iPhone, you better take a long look at MS. It doesn’t take long for a platform to take a huge amount of market share and if Google has a couple more product launches like the Droid. Say goodbye to the locked-down iPhone platform. It will go the way of Windows Mobile and the Dodo Bird.
I have to disagree. The android phones including the newest Droid and Eris don’t have good touch screens. It takes more then a touch to type. You have to tap on the screen. Not a good touch screen maybe a good tap screen haha. The physical keyboard brings me back to looking at the G1, yuck. The resolution is great, the Android OS 2.0 is great, and surfing on the internet is pretty damn smooth. So The Droid hasn’t won me over because of its keyboards. You have to tap it to type and not crazy for the physical keyboard. I’m looking at a powered up version of the G1.
It takes more then touch to type, you have to give the screen a tap. I thought the screen would be more responsive but its just as responsive as every other android device.**
who wrote this opinionated nonsense which sounds like it has no analytical basis? When I look at reviews for the Droid on YouTube it doesn’t remotley elude to this opinion.
I have an iphone and think the comparison should be more related to usability and features. Comparing apps is a ridiculous comparison given the amount of time that the app store has been out compared to android. Remember its a phone, not necessarily a gaming platform. Forget the apps give me a phone that isn’t slower than molasses.
You guys saying the droid screen is not sensitive clearly have not handled one. I’m sitting here holding mine in my hand, and touching the screen as gently as I possibly can registers the keystroke.
Both phones are quite good. Is the Droid good enough to ditch an iphone mid-plan? Probably not. But it is good enough that millions of people who were considering ditching Verizon to get an iphone (like my gf and I) probably won’t.
I love the iPhone and Mac. However, I support competition in the market. How else will Apple be motivated to come out with better products? In the end the consumer will always get the best product.
Iphone needs better camera and ability use run multiple Apps in background. Also a more configurable/useful home screen would be good. Apple needs this in their next phone to stay ahead. I have a iPhone 3GS but I really like the HTC Hero. Competition is good for customers.
Sorry to spoil the apple worship of this “article” but the droid, while still needing a few tweaks (as all new devices do), is beyond a suped up iPhone. The OS is smoother, the screen res and camera res are better, the keyboard and d pad are huge bonuses. Beyond the better service on verizon, it is just a better pure telephone. The plan is actually not more expensive at all. No $200/ month here. My wife and I both got droids and our combined bills are barely $200… iincluding the phone insurance which, oh yeah, you can’t get on iphones. The apps will grow quickly especially on an open source platform without apple tyranny bottlenecking development. (I don’t know who said the thing about having to tap the screen… simply not true.)
“these are not the droids were looking forouTou guys remind me of the guys who act like they don’t want to ride a Harley Davidson but they buy a copy of a Harley Davidson to save about 10% of the cost of just getting what they really want. LOL if your going for a smart phone and you can afford the best overall experience just buy an iPhone.
We have two iPhones & one Reg. Dumb phone (for my 9 yr. Old to loose, with insurance) & pay $200.& change.
the droid is a better phone in every way. i had it since the first hour and it kicks my friends iphone butt. every time i read about something somone thinks is wrong it is always false and apperent that they do not have the release model. the screen is true vga and nothing out there comes close in beauty or function. Take your iphone down to the verizon store and compare it, we did. the app store is already growing as most of the 1.5 os apps work fine. those that don’t are being updated every minute. the voice gps is awesome. google and moto had years to watch what worked and what users liked in the iphone and it is easy to jump ahead. what does apple do? announce that next year they will sell a iphone on verizon with a smaller screen than the current one. dumb really dumb. you guys need to get one and discover ITS ALL ABOUT THE SCREEN. everything else is just software.
I have both an iphone and a droid. the droid’s touch screen is not hard to use. I have barely used the slide out keyboard. The apps runs smoother and faster on the droid. Is it a better overall phone? Time will tell, but I have better service with the droid.
I bought the iPhone recently. I had waited until the new model expecting a better and bigger screen. I was dismaid when they mantained the current screen knowing that 800*480 3.8′ sceens were already available. Check out the HTC HD2 with the 4.2 hires screen. There is even an OLED phone out. I bought the 3GS thinking that there was no alternative coming soon. how wrong. The android market is exploding. The Apple/Jobs/ATT dictatorship is unbearable. It’s the model they offer or the highway. I need more options. In the Android market soon there will be many options. Want a bigger hires screen and there wil be some available.
The 3.0 should be called the 1.3;0 cut&paste, please.
need a bigger hires screen, sorry.
Need camera flash, sorry.
need front camera, sorry.
Need detachable battery, sorry,
need removable storage to share, sorry.
Need flash support, sorry.
The interface is almost 3 years old. Even WM has better shells.
My only hope is that on the next model thy will come with something really revolutionary. It’s unfair to critisize the iPhone. When it came 3 years ago it was revolutionary. We are comparing a 2007 phone with 2010 androids.
Thumb up for Droid. at least i can set myself free from both at&t and apple.
What rubbish.
The Droid just came out, and the author claims “..continues to lose steam..” Get real, and think longer term. The biggest advantage the Droid has is that it’s using an advanced OS (Android) which is fundamentally geared towards open standards – the wave this is creating is huge. Apple won’t know what hit it. They should stick to their creative designs, but that’s all they can handle. Patent designs and get revenues off of that. End of
You droid fanboys better LOVE it, Verizon is doubling the ETF to $350 this week! LMAO
I recently switched from AT&T to Verizon. AT&T’s coverage is pretty shotty where so my primary goal was to have the best coverage possible so my phone could actually function as a phone. Not being able to use Google Voice on the iPhone made switching even easier.
(Google voice is one of my fav things on the droid so far)
I also figured I would be able to switch back to an iPhone someday when Verizon got it but after using the droid, there’s no way I would switch back. The app’s argument doesn’t hold much water as when the iPhone first came out it didn’t have an app store or even a way to develop for it, I didn’t buy it for app’s.
In no order, the things I like about the droid.
1. Google
2. Java
3. Google Voice
From what I just read in this article, sounds like someone is trying to justify sticking to an iphone. I’ve had both. Verizon’s bill is cheaper, service is 300% better. at&t brags about 3G service. compare maps…i mean TRUE 3G maps. AT&T tries to show their coverage maps as 3G when actually their 3G service coverage map is so pathetic, if you don’t live in Chicago or New York, it’s almost non-existent. Don’t believe me, research. Not only that, but it’s as “iphone user” #19 says. Cameras, batteries and storage differences are just a start. Don’t get me wrong, if you like old iphone technology, by all means keep it and the dictatorship of Apple. Just don’t try to con other people into thinking that it’s all hype with the droid. May the best phone continue to “pwn” the iphone.
Unlike all of you, verizon has completely ignored my area, and therefore i have no service. AT&T on the other hand, has provided moderate service, and has plans to upgrade it further in the very near future. And yes, the droid does look nice, but why would i want to carry a phone and my ipod around, when i could just carry one. Until verizon steps it up in my area, and the droid can sync with itunes, i’m happily sticking with an iPhone.
Bahahaha, 95% of the comments disagree with the article. Sorry, your biased arguments are invalid. Compared the 2 phones for a few weeks of use each, picked the droid.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about with the tap verses touch typing. I have a Droid and if I really want to I can keep my finger in constant contact with the screen and just pause over the letters I want and it works. I have had a couple different iphones, different models and their screens were far less responsive.
Loving my Droid here. All my Iphone 3gs friends love it also. If they aren’t envious of just VZW, they are envious of the phones capabilities. I guess AT&T / Apple can’t win them all.
I’m sick of seeing everyone around me with an iPhone. No way I’m giving up mine but the number of times I’m seeing them in the street is just getting annoying.
Please buy some of the other guys phones!!!
No one wants to see monoculture.
The droid is much better. For one thing they have an app that provides you with free music, somthing the people at apple would never think of. Also if you want to talk about the droid not having a front camera the. Why don’t you take a look at the iPhone, yup no front camera there.
Iphones are for fags and lames
If you write and “article” about why the iPhone is better than the Droid/Milestone you should have more to say than that there are more apps for iPhone. The hardware of the Droid is superior and so is the OS, apps will follow. Also I don’t what it is people do with their phones but my Droid has apps for everything I need already and for plenty of things that I don’t need as well.
I have never used a Droid, but I just got an Iphone in October and absolutly love it! I do agree with the guy that said that AT&T’s 3G service isn’t as good as VZW, because it’s not. There is something you should know though. VZW uses AT&T’s phone towers, so VZW has had all these years to build there 3G, while AT&T has cared more about there voice calls. I’m sure AT&T will eventually catch up with their 3G service, and when they do we loyal customers will then be happy. Again, I love my iPhone and am extremely happy I finally got one. Competition is good, so who really cares if VZW finally got a good phone.
Had an iPhone, have a Droid. I will never… EVER go back to iPhone. The Droid does everything I need it to do, and it looks and responds better than the iPhone ever did for me. All the important apps are in the Android Marketplace, and they aren’t buried under ten million useless apps. The Google/Gmail/Facebook connectivity is awesome, too. I liked the iPhone, but I never truly loved it. I LOVE my Droid.
Bwahaha, this article must be a joke. It’s time to change the domain to ‘droidtalk.com. the iPhone is OLD technology. Its time to move on.
I just got the Iphone last week and I love it. Oh and to the person who said you can’t get the equiptment insurance on the iphone, yes you can, it’s just a $100 replacement fee instead of a $50 replacement fee. It’s very easy to use, great touch reponse, and the internet pages are great. Now, I only paid $100 with a upgrade and my bill for me and my hubby with net and unlimted text and picture message is only $140. I don’t have any complaints with at&t’s service, it’s good where I live, and although I know Verison has exceptional service ( I had a go-phone from them in my younger days and had service in the middle of the ocean), it isn’t so much better that I would switch.
I’m not sure which one is better but I’m a iPhone 3gs owner and I pretty much will always be an iPhone user from now on. I like the droid as well though with the multiple applications that you can run, so with that said that will be the most likely addition in the next generation of iPhone.
