It looks like Apple has released a new iPhone 3.1.3 update for iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS users. This new update includes the following fixes:

• Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
• Resolves third-party application crashes
• Fixes bugs with Japanese keyboard

You can either download the iPhone 3.1.3 update through iTunes, or you can also download it directly from the iPhone userbar.

Google will be releasing their Nexus One aka Google phone today. Will Nexus One be an iPhone killer? The answer is no.  Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky managed to get his hands on a Nexus One early, and posted his very detailed review up on Engadget. Go on and check it out, he did a good review of it. Joshua’s verdict is that the Nexus One is just another Android phone, and I’d have to agree with this judging by the videos and reviews I saw on the web. The iPhone will always win because of it’s simplicity!

No, the falling Apple logo on the Google hompage doesn’t have anything to do with Apple Inc. It is there to celebrate the birthday of Sir Isaac Newton. I believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen Google use an animated logo on their front page. I like it! Google is using javascript so the animation should work on most browsers. I tried it on my iPhone using the Safari browser and it does work!

To view the Isaac Newton Google Doodle on your iPhone just go to http://www.google.com and click View Google in: Classic. The homepage will come up and you will see the Apple logo falling down.

As I was browsing Google today I noticed a new logo which Google created to honor Sir Isaac Newton. The logo has an animated falling Apple and it’s missing an “o” from it. Google usually decorates their logo whenever they want to celebrate a special day, and today happens to be one of them. Isaac Newton was born on January 4.

Isaac Newton is well known for his three laws of motion. Google created an animation of the falling Apple because that is what inspired him to come up with the gravitational formula. I’m posting it here because I know many of you here use Google to find our website, and you will definitely wonder why the logo is on Google. I’m also a big fan of Isaac Newton!

For me, the best free iPhone app in the Apple App Store would have to be the Dragon Dictation iPhone app. The Dragon Dictation iPhone app allows you to speak in to your iPhone and have your speech converted to text. Your text can then be sent as a text message, E-mail, or pasted in to another iPhone application using the clipboard.

Pros:

• Converts your speech to text very accurately
• Offers suggestions for text that wasn’t converted from speech to text properly
• Saves you a lot of time

Cons:

• There is a 30 second time limit for dictation, but you can keep adding more text after every 30 seconds
• Requires you to have an Internet connection
• Doesn’t work well in noisy environments

I’ve been using the Dragon Dictation iPhone app for about a week now and have found it really helpful. I still type with my keyboard sometimes but whenever I  need to type an e-mail using this app saves me a lot of time. It really surprised me how accurate this iPhone app was. Google is working on a new phone, and it’s called the Nexus One. No, Nexus One is not a code name, it’s the real name of the phone that you see in the picture above. You can see more pictures of this at Engadget. The Nexus One is a slim phone running Google’s Android 2.1 operating system. HTC is manufacturing the Nexus One.  No price, specs, or other official dates have been confirmed. According to rumors, this phone will be unlocked and will sell for around $500. Reuter’s sources are saying that there will be two versions of the Nexus One:  One will be sold through T-Mobile with a service contract and the other will be sold through Google unlocked. Reuter’s sources are also saying that the Nexus One will be released around January 5.

The one question many people are thinking about is, will this phone be the iPhone killer? It’s too early to judge this as the phone is not even out yet, and Google hasn’t even confirmed that they’ll be releasing it. As far as we know this could even be just a phone for developers. This phone is running Android, and from my experience with Android it was not as user friendly as the iPhone. The main reason why many people choose the iPhone is because of the ease of use it offers. Apple has done a perfect job developing a great software, the iPhone OS, and it’ll take a lot for other competitors to catch up.

When the holiday season rolls around, people that rarely have a beverage start throwing down the spiked eggnog like it is water. Perhaps this is why the NHS has released the FREE app called Drinks Tracker for your iPhone.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we have all been guilty of having a few too many at one time or another and maybe this is exactly what us phone geeks need to make sure we are not getting on the road after a little extra holiday cheer.

Now while the application has the best intentions at heart, it is going to have to be used and listened to in order to be effective. How many people are actually going to take the time to put all of the information in their phone that is needed in order for this app to work? How many will forget about it once they have had a few too many?

The big knock on this program is that the user has a lot of data to enter. For instance, they have to enter the serving size of the drink, the % of alcohol that it contains and the amount of drinks that they have consumed. It sounds like a great concept and I am sure that many people will start using it with great intentions. However, how many people will merely put the iPhone back in their pocket once the little warning lights start to go off telling them that they are hammered?

In addition to keeping track of your drinks for the night, the app will also continue to monitor your alcohol. At any time, you can pull up the reports and get an analysis of your drinking habits. This is actually a great idea for those of us that consider ourselves to be casual drinkers as we may not be as casual as we think. Not that anyone wants to be nagged, but this is a download that may just be a very good idea to have. It could be a wakeup call for some and may just keep the keys in the pockets of a few people that would otherwise hit the road when they are in no shape to get behind the wheel.

The much anticipated debut of the iPhone in South Korea finally took place on Saturday and it was a huge hit. The actual “opening day” had been delayed on several occasions, but once KT Corp starting taking pre-sale orders, it looked as though the day was finally here. With about 60,000 units flying out of the stores on day one, Apple is once again proving that they have the dominate phone for any market.

When the iPhone first hit China, it met with limited success so the industry guru’s were watching this release pretty intently. With only 5,000 iPhone’s being sold during the entire first week in China, Jobs and the boys at Apple had valid reason for concern. With the big number going in the first day, they are probably sleeping a little better at night knowing that the iPhone can be competitive in this market.

Oddly enough, smart phones have not been going over very well in that part of the world as they only command about 1% of the market. That is a far cry from the 50% or so market share that they hold in the United States. Up until this point, LG has been one of the more dominant brands and the success of the iPhone on its first day should have them a little concerned.

While the initial response was pretty good, the consistent numbers are going to tell the tale as to whether or not the iPhone will be successful in this market. As contracts are running out and people are deciding to make the move, the question is will they go with the iPhone or the Droid, or will they continue to use the phones that LG and the other popular manufacturers are selling.

As has been said here and many other places, one can only imagine that Apple was ready to do battle with the Droid and that they were merely waiting for the release of their competitions top product before finalizing their latest version. It would be a good move as they would know what they were up against and could make whatever changes to the latest version to stand up against whatever Motorola was throwing out there.

Apparently, the new version of the phone is already out on the test market as an app developer noticed that a new version of the iPhone has showing up in their data. This is pretty interesting in that loyal iPhone users are tired of seeing their phone get bashed in the media and are hoping that the new version will put some of this to rest.

The rumors are running rampant (and at this point, that is all they are) all over the web as this story continues to get its legs. Estimates have the phone hitting the open market sometime in the summer of 2010. While it is unlikely that the phone is 100% of what will be seen on the market before it gets released, Apple iPhone users are getting excited at the mere thought of a “better than ever” iPhone release being so close.

This may be just the information that AT&T and the iPhone need to keep their bubble customers at bay. For anyone who has a contract that is just expiring or will expire over the next few months, this gives them something to look forward to just in case they are getting a little antsy and want to try the new Droid. You know the Internet will be loaded with reviews the moment the latest phone is released or that testing details are made public. That being the case, iPhone users that were considering moving over may just stay put and give the iPhone a chance to address the areas where the Droid is attacking them.
