Hotmail now works (for most) on the iPhone in many countries

A few days ago several sites reported that Hotmail on the iPhone was now available in the US (and some other countries too).

Hotmail

Several sites are reporting that Hotmail works great for them on their iPhone, since Microsoft is rolling out POP3 for Hotmail support in various countries. According to the stats, about 70% of users posting comments report that it works fine for them, and they can access their Hotmail on their iPhone.

The steps below detail how to set this up:
- Open the Settings app
- Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap ‘Add Account’
- Choose ‘Other’ for the account type
- Type your name, email and password.
- Tap ‘Save’
- Tap ‘Next’
- Close Settings and open up Mail
- Refresh your mail and it will show your messages.

After typing the info and then tapping next, some report being informed they need a Windows Live Mail Plus account to use their account in Mail, and some report it still works fine even if they don’t have one.

Feel free to let us know if it works for you.

It does in a sense of the word ‘work’.

It does not see all of your mailboxes which is a downside. So you can read email which is good, but you can’t move it into other mailboxes that you already have on the system, so that’s a bad thing. But reading and deleting…yes that works.

From Microsoft Office Live website: We are happy to announce that POP3 technology is now available to Hotmail users in the United States and Brazil in addition to the countries who rolled out the functionality last month (United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands). If you don’t see your country or region in this list, never fear, we’ll be rolling POP3 out to more parts of the world later this year. I still wish it was IMAP… that’s why I hated BlackBerry mail services. But POP is 10 times faster. Whatever… I can stop paying for Izymail now!

    Works for me in Canada.

Wish I could get some of the other custom folders to come up though, I’ve got filters set to send emails to certain folders instead of my Inbox, and I can’t get to those folders on the iPhone.

    Still, better then nothing!

Once you have entered username and password on the first option screen, another screen comes up with:

    IMAP / POP

name: (carried over from previous screen)
    address:(carried over from previous screen)
    description:(carried over from previous screen)

    Incoming mail server
    host name: (example mail.example.com)
    password:

    Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name (smtp.example.com)
    User Name: (Optional)
    Password: (Optional)

Anyone know where I can find out the information I need to enter into In and Outgoing Mail Servers?

Its working for free! But its probably too little too late. I abandoned my hotmail account when I started using iPhone because POP3 was not supported. I’m now pretty comfortable with my gmail.

I got the hotmail to work for me but I can’t see the folders that I have things saved on and when I delete emails on the computer it doesn’t change on the iphone.

  27. on 20 Jun 2009 at 1:21 pmElliot

It works but I can only read email. Annoyingly there is no deleted mail or even saved mail, so I can’t move a message to another folder such as saved. Annoying

works for me, only got the inbox but it works (Y)

Gotta select the “POP” option after you put your name and password.
Then in the incoming section put
    server: pop3.live.com
    username: your email address
    password: your account password

    outgoing section;
    server: smtp.live.com

I can read e-mails on my iphone but if delete them or send new e-mail using my phone there is no change to my hotmail next time I log in using a computer. why is this only updating 1 way instead of both ways?

  34. on 09 Dec 2009 at 10:39 amMatt

I’m setting up the account and i can see that only the inbox folder is there but whenever i try to upload my mail a message saying “The connection to the server ‘pop3.live.com’ failed.”

    anyone know why?
