3rd party Apps are limited to hacks and any official updates come straight from the bowels of Cupertino. Most of us prefer the later so while we’re limited in variety we can dream can’t we?

Phillip Ryu of Mac Fame derived from Mac Heist and My Dream App has made a Blog post on 5 Apps he’d like to see on the iPhone. Since we’re big on the iPhone here (if we’re not soon after the sky doesn’t exist and Mars is on a crash course with the sun) so naturally we should chime in.

1. Full File Browser

One thing I miss about the iPod was its ability to act as a removable Hard Drive and transfer notes by drag and drop. The iPhone lacks that unfortunately, that is one of those features that would really shine on the platform due to all the different type of documents stored on the iPhone. SMS messages could be converted to text, stickies synced and the iPhone used as a backup drive. My reasoning is that Apple didn’t want to compromise defense by allowing sensitive input to be read but a customizable file browser that allows the iPhone to act as a removable drive would be awesome.

2. iWork

The only text editor on the iPhone is Notes and while it works great for managing your grocery list, your to do list and your list of lists you cannot sync them by

or format them. Granted a sticky note is meant to act as a quick way to jot something down it is the only way to type something offline. Some Blogging software does not work on the iPhone and nearly all online text editors only offer a read only version.

An iWork suite or even iWork lite would shine on the iPhone. Photos can beinserted in documents directly from the Widget, Maps embed-able and Stocks would look freaking awesome in numbers (okay I made that one up, I never use the Stocks Widget). Oh and it has to work with number 1 or else no dice.

3. Voice Recording & Voice To Text Recognition

As a student I dream for the digital classroom (It’s about as far off as the Zune being successful) but electronics are often considered demons and often plague teachers due to idiotic users. The farthest we can come to ditching paper notes is voice recording.

Currently I use Erica Sadun’s VNotes App for recording, I love that it can record through the earphone Mic so I can tuck it away easily in my shirt. While that is extremely convenient it would be better whether it were taken a notch up, voice to text. Surely it would be plagued with bugs on the first run but I am confident with suitable development it’ll become very accurate.

I think these are great ideas, and I would also like to add a couple more tweaks to your list.

    4. I think that entering a Birthday for a contact is useless unless the Calendar app makes a note on the appropriate day for each contact. It does not necessarily need to automate a reminder, as that could be an option to turn on/off for each contact or system wide. But seeing as how it stores date information for each contact, when a Birthday is added, a note should be cross referenced in the Calendar application. Otherwise, what the frick is the point of having dates for each contact?? I don’t want to check my address book 24-7, nor do I want to double-enter Birthdays in the Calendar.

    5. When receiving a call, the answer functionality (Answer/Decline screen) trumps whatever you are looking at. But on a few occasions, the iPhone has somehow lost the Answer/Decline screen while the phone is ringing. I think there ought to be a simple way to return to the Answer/Decline screen. Whether it is done by tapping the Menu button at the base of the iPhone or by navigating through the software and hitting the Phone icon, I don’t care. Just give me the ability to do so!!

    6. The passcode for locking the phone should not be restricted to 4 digits. Give me a range. 4 to 6 or 4 to 8 digits. Something that makes it a little tougher for someone to crack.

    7. While I enjoy the ability to move icons from the Home Screen and create different “Spaces” in the iPhone, there should also be a means to hide unused or unwanted icons.

    8. COPY AND PASTE TEXT!!! Great, my iPhone can let me stream Flash based video from YouTube, but I cannot copy/paste contact information into an e-mail from my Contact list. While I greatly enjoy the multimedia functionality of the iPhone, I came from a Blackberry, where everything is text based and copy/paste helps me send messages I want to send. Also, if you’re looking to nail the enterprise market, this is paramount in the feature set.

    Thanks for reading… That’s all I’ve got…

My wife would LOVE an app that allows you to send someone one of your contacts info.
Options to text, email, or AIM would be even better. contact info would just be converted to simple text listing the available info for that contact.
    I think it’s a great idea too.
