According to Hitwise, one of the top services for online competitive intelligence, the iPhone made by Apple is the most sought-after mobile phone in the United Kingdom.
Hitwise has recorded that 11.4% of all Internet searches made related to a particular model of a mobile phone were searches made for the iPhone. This information was based on the data analysis done regarding the top 2,000 terms that were searched that directed traffic to a Custom Category of Hitwise, which included the top 100 retail websites online from the UK. It was conducted for four weeks and ended on October 20, 2007.
Based on the report, Apple accounted for more than a third (specifically 34.2%) of the searches for gadget brands that sent traffic to the retail websites. The iPod was tallied as the most famous of the products manufactured by Apple, and then the iPod Nano, then the iPhone and then another newly launched Apple product, the iPod Touch.
“Apple has an extremely strong brand in the UK, and this data illustrates that this is translating into searches that are sending traffic to retail websites in the run up to Christmas,” Robin Goad, Hitwise’s UK Research Director, said..
Nintendo was the second of the gadget brands that were most searched for. It accounted for 17.9% of all the searches made for gadgets that directed traffic to UK retail websites. Nintendo’s ranking was mainly because of their product Wii that accounted for more than half or 53.3% of all searches made for games consoles.
The third most famous brand was TomTom, which emphasized the satellite navigation systems’ popularity, which was fifth
Here are the rest of the Top 10 of the most searched for UK gadget brands: HP with 6.9%; Sony with 5.8%; Microsoft with 5.3%; Dell with also 5.3%; Nokia with 5.0%; Sony Ericsson with 4.8%; and Samsung with 4.2%.
Although the iPhone was the most searched for model of the mobile phones, Nokia still remains as the UK mobile phone brand that is most searched for. The Nokia N95 multimedia phone was recorded as the second of the phones most searched for. The w580i from Sony Ericsson is comes in third, followed by the u600 of Samsung and the 6300 from Nokia. “It is clear that high-end multimedia phones are what UK consumers are searching for in the run up to Christmas – both the iPhone and the N95 have advanced multimedia capabilities and 8 GB of media storage,” observed Goad.
After Nokia having a 30.7% share, here are the rest of the Top 5 of the most searched for mobile phone brands: Sony Ericsson with 30.6%; Samsung with 22.2%; Apple with 11.4%; and LG with 3.8%.
“Of the 43 phone models that we tracked in the top 2,000 search terms, 37 were manufactured by either by Nokia, Sony Ericsson or Samsung, which explains their dominance,” stated Goad, “but now Apple has entered the market and is rapidly gaining ground on the top three. It will be interesting to see how its share of searches changes following the iPhone’s UK release on 9 November.”
