The wait is finally over for the UK and the iPhone is now available to buy in the Apple Stores, O2 and Carphonewarehouse stores and online.

The expected queues across the country for the official 6.02 PM launch may not have been as large as those in the US but sales are

going strong.

At the London, Regent Street store on Saturday purchasers of the iPhone were greeted with claps and cheers from Apple staff as they left the store.

iPhone launch

When was the last time you purchased something and was made to feel so good about it? Nice touch Apple.

      Iam sure they were clapping - here’s why

      I love Apple, but they have got the iPhone just plain wrong - especially here in the UK. Here are three reasons;

      1. UK mobile phone purchasers who buy monthly contracts, especially at over £35 per month for 18 months, get free or heavily subsidised phone handsets (usually £150-200 cheaper). The iPhone is NOT subsidised, Apple pocket the normal subsidy and O2 benefit from the anti-competitive locking.

      2. On a monthly contract, free handsets are normally supplied unlocked allowing true freedom of choice for the consumer if the service provider is not up to scratch. The iPhone is not only network locked - it is locked to that SIM - O2 will not even allow Business Customers to buy an iPhone from them and use it their Corporate O2 calling and data plans. Blackberry must be relieved.

      3. At the end of the contract, I can sell my unlocked handset and anyone can put another sim in it and it just works - forget it with the iPhone. If you do not renew with O2 the contract says your phone lock will not be released and it will not function.

      An iPhone on a decent calling plan will cost £269 + 18 x 45.00 and be unusable at the end of the contract unless you renew. Total cost £1,079.

      Compare the iPhone with the Nokia N95. On a £35 plan + £7.50 unlimited data from O2 it costs £2.50 per month less than the above plan, the phone is free, it is unlocked and you will get about £150 for it at the end of the contract.

      Total cost difference to iPhone - about £464 cheaper.

      Many people in UK will only discover these hidden costs after they buy the iPhone but they are catching on fast. That is why iPhone UK sales will bomb.

      Sorry, Steve, I love the device and what you are trying to do (I have an iPhone (working great on Vodafone of course)), but in Europe we expect choice - especially when we have paid for the device.

      The foundation of the iPhone and Apple is built on Open source - perhaps Apple has forgotten its origins.

      Thanks to the iPhone Dev Team and all the other guys who are working so hard to keep this an ‘Open’ platform and give consumers what they want - an ‘open’ iPhone. You are heros !!
