iPhone voice recorder is available now

f you did not find the iPhone voice recorder which Steve Jobs had promised when he announced the iPhone in his Keynote address in January, don’t distress as Erica Sadun from Tuaw has just developed the latest iPhone hack, the iPhone voice recorder.Even though the iPhone voice recording utility is a little more than a proof of concept it works and lets you record audio on the iPhone.

The iPhone hackergot the notion of developing the iPhone Voice recorder utility after seeing a lot of interesting calls in the Celestial framework, specifically the AVRecorder class.

The voice recorder saves files in adaptive multi-rate format (.amr files), a format that can be played in Quicktime.

Agreed, the iPhone voice recorder utility might not have all the essential features one would look for, but isn’t it better than not having it, at least the basic functionality works. In fact Eric has already launched an improved version with an app wrapper after the initial release.

Well done Erica!

The iPhone software can be downloaded from here (app version & command-line version), so do let me know how good your voice sounds on the iPhone.

Update:-

Notes from Erica on how to install the utility:

Once the file is downloaded (download urls above) it needs to be run from the iPhone. whether you download the app version, install it into /Applications. whether you download the command-line version just stick it into /usr/local/bin or wherever.

At that duration, to load applications, you really need to be able to use Unix. First, you jailbreak your phone, which is a command-line utility. Next you run the ssh installer shell. soon after you start sftp’ing by files and making them executable. whether that all sounds like something you’ll be comfortable doing, check out http://iphone.natetrue.com/ and http://iphone.port21.com/Code/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip

Pretty much all the tools you need are in the http://iphone.port21.com/Code/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip bundle.

If that all sounds to geeky I would propose you wait for a step by step guide or a GUI based tool which will help you achieve all of that.

    Hi,
I really miss Visual Voice Mail in my iPhone. It was one of the best promise that Steve has done.

But for us “europeans” this is anavailable, for sure no one carrier would miss our calls to listen to our messages.

I think it would be nice to have an applcation that trasforms iPhone in a answer machine, as we saw in the Keynote.
not a simple voice recorder that can be used for other reasons.

Who’s gonna work on it? Erika, do your best!
