Is the iPhone Going Green?

Well they may not be, but there is an app for that! There is a new iPhone app that is about to hit the stores that will enable the iPhone user to measure wind speed.

Windspire Me

While some will question the usability of such a program, those that are into renewable energy are frothing at the mouth for it to be released. Instead of purchasing expensive equipment to get vital information for the placement of windmills, just use the app.

With the ‘Windspire Me!’ app from Create with Context and Mariah Power, you can measure wind in your area, map it for others to see, and share your reading via email.

Renewable energy is something that is sweeping the nation, and for very good reason. The push to have a safer environment has everyone looking at solar and other energy power sources like never before. How does this app help with that you ask? Quite simply, you hold your phone up in the air and you are able to measure the wind speed in the area.

This is extremely important in the placement of windmills and trying to figure out where they will work. For instance, if you have a “wind tunnel” close by that averages over 12 mph, you have enough energy to run a few large appliances for the year off of one device. While this app may not be the final source of data that you would want to use before installing a wind turbine, it can give you a general idea if you have what is needed for the device to be effective.

The whole point of this application was to get the general public a little bit more involved in alternative energy sources, and anyone would have to admit that just introducing this app will make some noise in the renewable energy market. While everyone is pretty much aware of solar power these days, wind turbines have yet to hit the front page, but it may only be a matter of time with the iPhone releasing an application that promotes wind turbine energy.

Coming soon to the App Store and designed specifically for the iPhone 3GS, you’ll not only be able to measure the wind, but you’ll find out what you could power with a Windspire … and how much CO2 you can save from the environment!
