It’s on! (maybe) Apple vs. Palm

Palm has apparently fired back regarding Apple’s comments about defending their IP to indicate they’ll do the same.

Palm may be facing a legal showdown regarding their new Pre handset soon to be released, due to Apple being granted a patent on “multitouch” technology, which the Pre may be using in one form or another.

Here are some quotes from Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox: “Apple was not the first to do multi-touch…Multi-touch has been around for more than 20 years. Palm has been building its own intellectual property portfolio for 15 years, and we will defend it vigorously, if necessary,” she stated. Oh boy.

She stated to another site: “We have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space. If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.”

It’s kind of David vs. Goliath, but who knows what might happen. We’ll of course be following this story closely over the coming weeks to see if anything interesting develops.

I actually doubt very much that Apple will try to sue competition trough this patent for various reasons. Pre is not only multi-touch device and there is plenty of such devices and even more coming up.
Actually here one recent article http://www.cnbc.com/id/28978246 If Apple can sue Pre then Microsoft and some others will have green light to sue Apple ;)

Apple can just buy Palm if they really like what the software does. Or they can sue them to death and pick up the pieces for a dime on the dollar. But I believe Apple WILL sue Palm because of the threat of diminished sales, and to make a point. Even if the Univ of Del “may” have the patent, it’s usually the one who brings it to market first prevails – they wield the golden hammer to squash the little guys. Just think of the millions AOL and MSFT spent in chasing a few spammers on the other side of the world !! Just to save their image. You can bet Apple will sue Palm, to show the world they are the only original, unique company that can produce such a product.
