iTunes Ringtone Hacking, a.k.a. how to convert your songs into ringtones for free

So shortly before the big Apple event a couple days ago there was a company that released the program iToner for $15, with that program you could turn any of your songs into ringtones for your iPhone. next the big Apple event came and Apple announced that feature would be built into the new version of iTunes but would cost $.99.

Now someone else has come along and informed us that by simply changing the file extension of the files you can construct any .AAC track into a ringtone. that operation doesn’t even require any software you just edit the file and change the extension to .M4R.

    hi trying to transfer my music into ringtones but having no luck i am not able ti change the extention infact cant even find where the extention is…. can u help???

    this doesn’t work. you can change the extension to m4r and it will show up in “ringtones” in your iTunes; however, when you go to sync your iPhone, it does not show up under ringtones.

    ps. paul: to see the extension on a song, simply highlight the song in your library folder (or wherever the original song is stored) and click “apple + i” (you can also click file and scroll down to get info), then unclick the “hide extension button”.

    In order for it to show up on your ringtones on your iPhone you need to make the song less than 30 sec. or it wont register you can do it with garage band for macs and hulio for pc’s among other sound programs

    I tried this today and i have the same problem as tk. I made sure that it was 29 sec and it still wont show up on my phone. any suggestions??
