Both countries, Japan and Korea, are using W-CDMA for their cellular networks. The iPhone is a GSM device that does not have 3G, thus lacking the W-CDMA which is strictly needed in Japan and Korea. As a result, it cannot be used in the Pacific Rim. However, it will all change soon, even sooner than you think. This would probably happen at the upcoming WWDC when Apple would launch the much awaited 3G iPhone.

iPhone

There is a great possibility that the iPhone will be entering the Korean and Japanese world and this issue is starting to get real rather than spreading as a rumor. In fact, there are now company names dropping in the issues

such as the Korea Free Telecom and the NTT DoCoMo. These two mobile service providers will be the lucky ones who will get to distribute the latest 3G iPhone exclusively.

But Apple may encounter a problem in these countries. Both Japan and Korea already have networks and handsets that are more advanced than the iPhone. So there will be a question as to whether the iPhone will be availed by Japanese and Koreans just like the people in United States did or not. It is impossible that the iPhones will have zero buyers from these countries. But probably its not as high as the buyers from other parts of the world where iPhone can be purchased.
