The madness began with a 300 page iPhone bill and ended with less of an environmental impact. So how did it happen? All thanks to the ability of the Net, our level of control is massive and frightening.

Anyways, I am certain you’ve seen the video of Justine unboxing a 300 page iPhone bill. whether you aren’t familiar with the senseless onslaught of trees, basically your bill details every input transfer you made. That 60 MB Video file you downloaded at 3.24:13 AM at 7/26/07, yea they got that as well as well as that 2.0 KB newsletter you sent out at 4:49:56 PM just before that ever so vital meeting.

While Greg is perfectly happy with useless goods records and his inferior 29 page bill (I tripled that easy in 2 weeks) some of us are not. True there is online bill pay which is virtually paper free but for some us we just can’t trust electronics and credit cards side by side. My mom being a perfect example, after a mishap with Edison where “One day Online Bill Pay” means “No we will never send you a paper bill ever again and we will not tell

you why” she’s been wary of paying bills online.

While it probably was a glitch or human error there are just some that want a paper bill. Now I am not going to herald the Net as our environmentalist saviour but instead it exposed us to what AT&T is doing about and it’s an improvement.

After Justine’s story got picked up by traditional news outlets and spread to the Internet’s nether regions it plus made it’s way to Digg. My friend, Muhammad Saleem had done some basic calculation on how much destruction AT&T does to send paper bills with so much detailed info to iPhone customers. It comes out at 74,535 trees being destroyed to prepare paper bills.

Luckily an AT&T repsent a very interesting follow up to the problem. Basically summary billing will become the norm so every info transfer will not be detailed, only what is very critical. Customers are being encouraged to use online bill pay and that whether you are signed up for summary billing, you will have to pay an additional $1.99 per month for every line to see the extended notes.
