The Apple web applications online directory has been released to the public and there are over 200 web applications being featured on the portal. Today we’ll take a moment to look at one of the applications being highlighted on the directory - a Facebook application that connects the users’ iPhone to friends’ pages for uploading and sharing photos and for using messaging services.
Facebook is a top-tier social networking website that is often cited as cleaner than rival MySpace. Facebook has grown in popularity and that they are the first social netwrok to fully embrace the iPhone gives them a further leg up on being seen as the social networking site of the over-teen crowd.
The Facebook iPhone application is available at http://iphone.facebook.com. After loggin in you will find that the iPhone Facebook application offers tabs for Home, Profile, Friends and Inbox. The lack of a Networks tab in the iPhone application is just about the only major difference between the full-blown site and the iPhone version. The other tabs provide for the full functionality of the website on the iPhone or iPod Touch
If you have networks defined in your profile it is possible to browse to the network on the iPhone, but you have to leave the iPhone specific site and do so within the normal website. Thankfully the iPhone (as we all know) is more than capable of handling that.
Facebook allows users to share news from friends and photos. The iPhone version allows for uploading pictures taken from the phone camera, although the iPod Touch does not. The messaging functions are full featured making use of the adaptive keyboard iPhone users have become so enamored of and scrolling the list of contacts within Facebook is as natural as scrolling the contacts within the built-in contact list on the phone.
The iPhone Facebook application basically delivers the most used functions to an interface that is at once familiar for iPhone users with sliding panels indicating page shifts. It’s all delivered through AJAX technology and is crisp and fast. Any iPhone users that are also Facebook account holders should find this newest app, featured on the Apple Web Applications Directory, a great addition.
