Among the web applications listed in the Apple iPhone Directory is the application provided by Fandango. This application, unlike the Weather Channel’s application talked about in a previous post, is not distinctly an iPhone application, but is included in the directory as a capable mobile web application.

Fandango is a web-based service for obtaining movie tickets. Highlighted on the front page of the mobile web application are the top five Fandango movie picks. Clicking one of these links provides local movie times based on your location. If you have not defined your location by either city and state or zip code you will be prompted to first provide this information. If you have already provided this information or if your browser is already cookied then you will see a list of theaters near your zip code along with the movie picks from Fandango.

The mobile version of the Fandango site differs from the full-blown version in that it does not contain the graphic intensive pages that the portal site uses. If you want to see movie poster graphics then visit the full blown Fandango site with the Safari browser.

Clicking through to a movie location provides a nice map delivered via MapQuest technology

though it is not scalable or moveable and it does not provide for directions. This is one aspect of the mobile Fandago site which could certainly be upgraded for the iPhone. As with all web applications on the Apple iPhone, phone numbers listed are directly dialable.

Movie tools allow you to drill down to the details of a movie along with rating, duration, release date, cast and a synopsis of the movie. Further drilling allows you to read critic reviews of the selected movie.

One seriously lacking feature on the mobile version of Fandango is the ability to purchase tickets that the full website is best known for. Unfortunately although the links on the mobile site may give iPhone users false hope of being able to purchase tickets, you need to navigate to the full site to be able to do so.

So although the mobile application from Fandango is not what the full site offers by any stretch, it is still a worthy application even if just to check local movie times and then use the calling feature to make connection with the theater directly. Apple was right to include this in the directory although it is not an iPhone-specific application from Fandango.

I looked at the interface and really like it. I appreicate no graphics because then it loads faster on the edge. And I was able to purchase tickets from my phone. So that “seriously lacking feature” is actually there.
