New jailbreak and Unlock release for the iPhone 3GS

The iPhone Dev Team just released updates to their cross-platform jailbreak and unlocking tools redsn0w and ultrasn0w, and while unlocks are definitely good news for folks who want to use an iPhone on non-sanctioned carriers, we’re wondering: Do you still jailbreak? Is it still worth it to you?

Many have been jailbreaking their iPhones since the very first jailbreak was available, but the necessity of jailbreaking continues to drop, starting with the introduction of the App Store, and more recently with the addition of push notifications (which make running apps in the background less necessary). So let’s hear it from our readers: is this something you look for as quickly as you used to?

Let’s hear more specifics on your reasoning—whether you’re still jailbreaking or not—in the comments.

I am still jailbreaking in part out of principle, and in part because running the iPhone on TMobile with unlimited internet access and messaging for $19.99/month, a flexible voice plan (currently $29.99/month) and no contract (long time customer) is extremely cost effective. I won’t make any changes to my plan that involves taking on a new 2-year contract. I own the device and the service provider doesn’t own me.

I have the same reasons as Elaine, but I also use MANY apps from Cydia that I couldn’t live without.

SBSettings- I have gotten SO used to it that whenever I do a restore, use someone’s non jailbroken iPhone, or am jailbreaking someone else’s iPhone, I will swipe along the status bar to turn off/on a toggle! This also let’s you hide app icons(i can’t stand more than 3 Springboard pages)

SpotBright- let’s Apple’s Spotlight search hidden apps (which in my opinion, why have the ability to search for apps if they’re on your springboard anyways) and it also has a “recently used” apps list when your search field is empty

winterboard/SSH- I can’t stand a lot of aspects of Apple GUI. That dock background is the FIRST thing I change! Having a customized iPhone is important to me. Not because of being “unique” but because some of the default thing is just plain annoying to even look at

iRealQuickSMS- this one is a gem! It allows you to send a text message from inside ANY application, and the same goes for sending a reply to recieved text messages! Since when I’m on my phone playing a game and having a lengthy text convo, it can get VERY annoying to close the game, reply to the text, launch the game, and recieve a text reply as soon as the game opens! Instead, with irealquicksms the recieved text pop up has a blank input area so you can reply to the text anywhere. Also if you don’t want to reply right that second you can press the home button to “hide” the SMS in the status bar, where tapping it will show the message again for you to reply.

These are the things I can think of right now.

Apple COULD possibly include some of these features into future OS releases and they probably will, but I will always jailbreak! Apple has taken SO many of it’s “features” from the jailbreak community who had them for quite some time. Most of the jailbreak solutions are better (IMHO) than Apple’s take on them, with the exception of copy/paste! Apple got that right!

Simply put, Apple doesn’t have a huge competition in the mobile market, and we all know competition drives progression and inovation. Apple NEEDS the jailbreak community to give the a quasi-”competition” or else Apple could start to “slow-down” with their releases of features in firmware updates!
