It was a long, long wait for an iPhone with 3G data capabilities, but now that it’s here, people are starting to look toward what’s next. The Long Term Evolution Standard, also known as 4G, is the next generation in cellular data after 3G, but AT&T states (according to inside sources) not to hold your breath waiting for it to get to the U.S. It may end up being tested in Europe before it gets to the states, and even in

Europe it could be 2 years off.

AT&T

AT&T claims logistical and engineering concerns may delay the release of the new technology for awhile. Interesting to think about, especially considering the spotty coverage and the fact that even 3G is difficult to get in certain non-urban areas right now.

All this serves as a reminder that wireless phone network technology is still in its infancy and even the big companies are figuring things out as they go along.
