One developer’s experience and the emerging quality vs. marketplace issue for the iPhone App Store

A software engineer who wrote what he calls a “terrible” and “shit” app in less time than it typically takes to eat lunch has since watched it shoot to the top ten of Apple’s App Store.

That’s the experience of High Gloss recently. After running out of ideas to make his own app, he looked through the Top 100 apps for inspiration.

In just 20 minutes he wrote Sound Grenade (available in the App Store for free), which is currently listed second under the top free apps, in the wild card category of “Utilities”.

It basically shows an image and plays a loud sound and shows an image at the touch of a button. That’s it. And it has over 100 glowing reviews right now on the App Store and has been downloaded over 250,000 times so far. It contains a grand 10 lines of code, according to the developer.

It’s a known fact that the App Store apps vary greatly in quality and usefulness, but this instance illustrates that people are hungry for iPhone apps of any kind, whether they’re particularly useful or not. It could be seen as a prime opportunity for some developers, but this developer sees it as both a curse and a blessing. We agree; this is a wide-open market right now for the iPhone, and nearly any idea will more than likely be welcomed and possibly a smash hit.
