Partial touchscreen failure leads to useless iPhones

Do you have an iPhone to hand?  Try fingering the screen near the top or the bottom of the device; is it responding as it should?  whether not, you might be one of a seemingly growing number of owners having issues with MultiTouch; a band of touchscreen inactivity, half an inch from either the top or bottom of the panel, which renders some controls inaccessible and can even grow to further encompass on-screen buttons.
