Phil Schiller Sheds Some Light on the App Store

The App Store is making the news just as much as the iPhone is these days and it is no wonder. iPhone ads are constantly bragging about how many apps are available on the iPhone, but Senior VP of Apple, Phil Schiller, recently did an interview with Business Week (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2009/tc20091120_354597.htm) where he hinted that maybe the App store could use a nice trim of the fat.

Phil Schiller

He reveals that the App Store gets a staggering 10,000 application every week. When you do the math, it is easy to see why so many people are upset about getting denied. There are a lot of people sitting on the sidelines trying to get in on this gravy train. Out of that 10,000, about 1,000 of them are automatically thrown into the can as they are labeled inappropriate. This has actually been the tag that has been put on many of the apps that have made the headlines right here.

The interesting part of the interview revolved around the topic of duplicate content. This was something that was brought up by Verizon fans in that some of the applications are ridiculous in the amount of versions that are available. There are some apps that have several hundred versions of the same thing. After all, how many different ways can there be to see a weather report?

While there was nothing mentioned about capping out certain apps, you would think that it would make sense to do that to protect the integrity of the store and their advertising campaigns. After all, it is hardly professional to advertise over 100,000 apps if you really only have a few thousand different things that they can be applied to. This only gives competitors more ammo to use in attacks to make the point that they may only have 10,000 apps, but they cover more areas than the iPhone does. Has it hit that point yet? Absolutely not, but don’t be surprised if it does.

I think its fine professionally, just because theres more than one it prevents a monopoly, keeps apps working hard to be on top, etc

i remember when AIM/IM + supported push support and that was a HUGE deal.

In addition with a number like 100,000+ apps, how many do you think are demos too? its not like their making something up, but come on… with 100,000+ apps how many can be original?

I doubt given a week to think about it, i could name 1,000 different apps that Could pass and become part of the store *not counting homebrew stuff* and really a lot of these things get into the ehh… range

etc i can keep going but its all common sense

I like the fact that there are lots of weather apps. I have used 3 in total before finding my ultimate weather app. If there was only one weather app I would be pissed off if it was not the one I liked.

Its where you have one app that is split up into multiples – for maximum profit making of developers, and maximum annoyance for the end user. Take Bunny farts for example. Rubbish app – but look how many of them there are!!! All by the same developer.
