A rather interesting application that has been released a few days ago is called Ocarina. Ocarina is a musical “instrument” of sorts that can actually detect your breath (similar to a flute or recorder) and allows you to play “music” with your iPhone.

Ocarina

It uses the microphone to detect the impact of breath and then uses the iPhone’s touch screen to play different notes. Not only that but it uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to affect vibrato and pitch of the sound.

Another interesting aspect of the app is the social features included. Just

tap on the globe icon and you will see and hear other Ocarina players throughout the world and their own creative sounds made using the program. The globe view will highlight the source/location of the music. You can even rate the performances as well.

This could open whole new avenues utilizing other instruments or sounds, making it a useful creative tool for the amateur musician.

Check out the video demonstration below:

The app sells for only $0.99 and is available for immediate download in the App Store.
