Poor battery life an issue with iPhone 3.1?

The iPhone Blog reports that Apple is taking steps to investigate numerous reports of reduced battery life from iPhone OS 3.1 users. The company’s AppleCare division has reportedly begun contacting users complaining about the problem in its support forums, asking users a series of 11 questions about their battery life issues.

Battery Logging

An undisclosed number of users who have posted on Apple’s discussion boards about poor battery life following the iPhone 3.1 software update are being contacted by AppleCare helpdesk with a hefty list of 11 follow-up questions.

These questions focus primarily on the usual battery culprits, email (especially push), WiFi and Bluetooth, and App Store apps. Number 10, asking “When you notice a power drop, does it seem to be a legitimate power drop, or rather an issue with the battery icon indicator?”, is certainly interesting.

Users are also being sent a “Battery Life Logging” configuration profile for installation on their devices. The configuration profile reportedly tracks battery usage data and syncs it to iTunes, where users are asked to send the data back to Apple for analysis.

Would be neat to have a Battery Life Logger for personal use.

I just purchase 2 i-phones in June (2009) and the battery life is horrible. I feel At&t needs to furnish new batteries FREE of charge for this model phone. I hardly use my phone, but use it for emergencies. I have children and they all live out of state. My husband and I, are over 60, and feel that a cell phone is a necessity. For what we paid for the phone, and the monthly service fee on these phones….the batteries should be free! When we purchased the phones we asked if there were any known negative problems with the phones, and were told they were GREAT. We both love our phones and the services they offer, but the battery life is another total experience…and it is negative.

    Joining to the crowd,
I have experience serious battery drainage even thou I’m on standby mode, in every 2 to 4 minutes, the battery percentage drops by 1% even when I’m not using any apps, in fact I was just checking the time. Again and again, and I have realized that it had dropped again, time after time, this happened immediately I’ve updated to OS 3.1..

I hope APPLE will seriously look into this matter and quickly come up with a new OS version or something, that will fix all the bugs in 3.1 Thanks.

I can’t believe apple has continued to ‘ignore’ the battery issue with this new 3.1.2 point update. I purchased two of the 16gb white 3gs iphones. My wife and I are sick of having to bring them into the MOA apple store for tech support. As stated above, we also really enjoy all the iphone has to offer, albeit with consideration of the very poor battery life. We have done it all with our iphones. Updates, switching back and fourth from USB charing to wall charging. Turing the brightness all the way down, turning off push, email, wifi and bluetooth. I removed all apps, restored as a ‘new phone’ and even tried to use the phones with no apps at all. I’ve run the battery to 0% after each update for battery conditioning, and charged it to 100% at completion of discharge, NOTHING WORKS! Despite months of out best efforts and wasted hours and hours of time I think were throwing in the towel. I’m not getting rid of our phones, but I’m finished being apples ginny pig, I got enough of that from Microsoft for the last 15 years.
