One developer has created an application for the iPhone that tries to locate your iPhone if it gets stolen. Its chances of success depend somewhat on how ill-informed and greedy the robber is (not too much of a stretch given how thieves typically are).
As there’s no way for ordinary users to track the iPhone when it’s out of their possession (no LoJack for the iPhone exists yet), the Private-I application puts an icon on the home screen marked “PRIVATE” in big red letters. The hope is that the genius who swiped your phone isn’t interested in clearing and selling it on eBay, but is actually after all
When the button is touched, the iPhone tries to find its location using GPS and cell tower information, and then sends an email to the owner giving its best estimate of where the phone is. Presumably, the owner then tries to locate whoever is using their iPhone.
Seems like this sort of gadget bounty hunting may not be safe for the average citizen and its usefulness might be a tad limited, but it only costs $1.00 so it might be worth a shot. A safer bet might be keeping careful track of your iPhone.

This is why we need background processing. Then apps like http://www.instamapper.com/ would be even more useful.
We could keep it running in the background and then have it e-mail us.
Maybe someone will create an app like the one for the BB where you can send it a code and it sends you it’s location back. http://www.blackberrytracker.com has a fence option so if it leaves a certain area it will let you know.
This app is ridiculous… think about it: Even if someone finds your phone and clicks the icon, how long do you think he will keep this app running? 30 sec? a minute? five minutes?
As soon as he closes the app, the location information will no longer update (since iPhone apps CANNOT run in the background.)
Good luck finding this person!
I got the Owner Information app from the app store.

You can enter your personal information and create a wallpaper with your information on it.
This way in case an HONEST person finds your iPhone and actually want to return it they can easily figure out who is the owner.
yeah mrjones is right… not to mention the “this application is trying to access your current location” popup…
