Push Notifications coming in iPhone 2.2.1 update?

RussianiPhone.ru claims that they have seen iPhone 2.2.1 Beta 1 release candidate, and that it implements Push notifications as well as over-the-air MobileMe syncing with Notes support.

iPhone 2.2.1 push notification

As proof they’ve posted a screenshot showing the Notes and Calendar applications with a update badges displayed (though this is relatively easy to fake). But it does bring up the possibility that Apple is finally listening to users who have been asking for this for awhile now.

Several sites have posted that they can’t verify these claims at this time. Apple has not yet seeded iPhone 2.2.1 Beta 1 to developers, so if RussianiPhone.ru does have a copy, they obtained it outside of any “official” public distribution.

While Apple originally promised Push notification support for September, Steve Jobs acknowledged a delay in an email and said they wanted to “get it 100% right the first time.”

Developers and users have been anxiously awaiting the implementation of this new feature. In the current iPhone firmware, applications are not allowed to run any background tasks. As a result, an application like a Instant Messaging application would be unable to notify the user that a new message had arrived. Push notifications would provide the tools to trigger these alerts, and allow the running of things like IM type programs along with other things at the same time. If it is included, this could be a huge evolution in the usability of the iPhone.

I’m just waiting for an update that will make my damn iphone connect to my car’s blue tooth system. Nice that I have a $400 phone and a $40,000 car and I can’t use the two the way they are supposed to be used right? This is ridiculous!! How about sending pictures with text?? My piece of crap RAZR could do that!!

Well I only paid 300 for my phone, I walk everywhere, and I’m perfectly fine with sending my pictures for free instead of paying for media texting. But I can understand. kind of.

i agree with the music over bluetooth and what pisses me off the most is trying to receive picture texts and can’t. I have to go to a website and type a password. that’s bull.

neil, you can “kinda” picture message on an iphone. you have to send the picture via email to the 10 didgit telephone number at mms.att.net (ex: 5125125122@mms.att.net). this is for att network only but will forward your email to an att server that will convert it to a pic message and send it to the telephone number via txt. the reciever can then go in and reply to that message as a pic or txt message and it will come back to your email via that same server. piece of cake. also your phone will not link via bluetooth to your car to play music b/c it is not A2DP which is the type of bluetooth required to transfer data, images and mp3’s, so you wont be able to send your music to your car’s strereo but you should already able to talk on your phone handsfree via your bluetooth speakers in your cars radio.

John said “also your phone will not link via bluetooth to your car to play music b/c it is not A2DP which is the type of bluetooth required to transfer data”… which is only 1/2 true. The hardware is capable, but 2 out of the 25 BT ‘profiles’ are enable at the OS level.

to text a pic to another servers phone you just need there phones pix emal addy. example 16098546658@vzw.pix and you can email them a pic. they recive it as an mms text mesage. I just have them email a pic to me from there phone to get there phones email addy. then they can email pix to you, and you can email them back in real time. no passwords or crappy att web pages that never load or allow you to save you pic.

  18. on 24 Feb 2009 at 6:24 pmjon

Dude…i had a 3G razr and it kicked ass. I bought the “revolutionary” iPhone like 1.5yrs ago…no warranty, blows up. sound can mess up. no pics, no vid…youtube plays about half the movies…etc etc.
    Apple is garbage

All I can say is that all of you are spoiled! If you want another phone then go out and buy one. The only issue I have is the lack of push to my subfolders in email which is a small issue in comparison. Remember when phones had cord and were attached to the wall? Quit complaining.

hi all, you can send media messages, AND, receive them, but you have to use 2 applications, swirly mms for sending, and mms from app store, for receiving.

I’m frustrated with not being able to send picture messages, not being able to record video, not being able to forward text messages, there being no copy/paste in texting/notes/etc, not being able to create different albums in photos without downloading them from your computer, not being able to have certain text message sounds for certain people, not having a landscape keyboard for texting, not being able to delete default aps that I don’t want like stocks/weather, and the mail not automatically updating itself rather than having to open it up to know you got an email. Also, it would be nice to be able to apply different effects to your pictures.

It’s funny because my old Samsung Sync that cost a whole lot less than the iPhone can do almost all of the things I listed. These things are simple. Almost every phone I’ve seen can do these easy things…

I know there are probably aps/jailbreaking that allow for these things to be possible, but it would be nice for it to be default, like most phones.

What's your opinion?
