Report: Intel chip in the iPhone would have made it more vulnerable?

Intel publicly admitted in a statement refuting a comment by one of their mid-level executives that Apple should have used their Moorestown chipset instead of the ARM, saying it wouldn’t work due to different power concerns. Now one security researcher says that’s not the only reason. There’s another, and it’s a pretty huge reason: it would have made it more vulnerable to hacker attack.

Dino Dai Zovi, an independent security researcher, commented on the possibility in an interview during the Hack In The Box security conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He commented: “That will make the iPhone x86, and that will make a lot of attacks easier,” he said, in regard to the use of an Intel chip being in the iPhone.

He went on to say that the fact Apple uses an ARM processor, which isn’t as familiar an architecture, made it less vulnerable to attacks or hackers. And the fact that compared to PC’s, the Mac and iPhone’s market share isn’t as high, making it a less attractive target for hackers.

This writer’s humble opinion: Perhaps Intel needs to stick to minding their own store and less time commenting on what Apple should or shouldn’t do.
