Apple announced the Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange Program. The safety alert is aimed at all iPhone 3G owners in the U.S., Canada, and several Latin American countries, among them Mexico.

The program permits users of iPhone 3G units with the ultracompact USB power adapter to exchange it, free of charge. Apple has announced the exchange because of a rare, but potentially dangerous safety issue.

“Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the

adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported,” said Apple in a statement.

Apple advises users who are using the ultracompact adapter that came with the iPhone 3G to stop using them right away until they receive a new, redesigned adapter. Users should recharge their iPhone 3G’s battery with the USB cable connected to a computer, or by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter, or with any third-party adapter.

Replacement adapters will be available beginning Friday, October 10, 2008, according to Apple. You can order a replacement adapter online, or exchange the adapter at an Apple Retail Store. According to reports, the redesigned model will have a green dot on the bottom.
