I know a few folks who have had Hotmail address for a distant moment and don’t want to change. They additionally have bought iPhones and now have no way to use the built-in client on the iPhone to read mail. that solutions lets them read Hotmail on their iPhone. (Actually, the same setup can apply for Apple Mail, too.) One catch here is that your Hotmail history must support Forwarding. You can see it is does under the Hotmail Options.
Basically these directions help you set up forwarding in Hotmail so that incoming messages are forwarded from Hotmail to a Gmail history. that plus sets up Gmail and the iPhone to manufacture replies and new messages look like they come from Hotmail. When complete, you can read, reply, and send messages in Gmail and the iPhone as whether you were on Hotmail.
With that solution in place:
- Email public send to your Hotmail address will be visible on your iPhone in the built-in iPhone Mail software.
- If you reply to a letter on the iPhone or in Gmail, to your recipients it will look like it came from your Hotmail address.
- You can still check mail using Hotmail on the web whether you like.
- You can plus log into Gmail and see your Hotmail messages there.
- An added bonus is that you will benefit from Gmail’s junk mail filter, which is excellent.
- Since Gmail supports IMAP, the iPhone and the Gmail mailbox is synced nicely as you read, delete and filter messages.
Note: While you can still read mail on the Hotmail website as you currently do, there is an advantage to reading your Hotmail in your new Gmail history. The iPhone and the Gmail detail will be synced — so for example, Gmail and the iPhone will keep track of which messages you have read on either device. whether you get a notice and read it on the iPhone, when you check your Gmail history it will additionally show as read. Were you to check your mail on Hotmail.com, messages you have already read on the iPhone will show as new.
The same goes for deleting messages. whether you delete a note on the Gmail site, these will be deleted from the iPhone, too. The same is true for filters. You can set up filters on the Gmail site, and that filtering will by synced to the iPhone. None of that is synced with the mail you see on Hotmail.com. So basically, whether you implement that, you are better off just checking and reading your Hotmail messages in Gmail, but its up to you.
In addition to these steps, you may need to do work to bring your Hotmail address book to Gmail. Gmail
Start with Gmail. Create a new Gmail detail. Note that you could use an existing Gmail detail for that solution. that has some tradeoffs, one being that messages you send from the iPhone seem to come from that Gmail history instead of your existing Hotmail explanation. whether you just want to keep your Hotmail detail intact and use that as your main history, I think it’s better for to create a new Gmail history and just use that for handling Hotmail.
Under Settings, go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP » Enable IMAP. Save the changes. Under Settings and soon after Accounts, add another mail address — add your existing Hotmail explanation.
Now go to Hotmail. In your inbox, there should be a note from Gmail; you need to visit on a link in that knowledge. Next go to Options and set up forwarding to your new Gmail explanation. It’s up to you whether messages are retained in Hotmail. (If you don’t have an option for forwarding, you may be out of luck. Perhaps others have advice on how to get Hotmail to allow that.)
Back to Gmail: There should be a report from Hotmail; you need to go on a link in that data. Now back into Gmail settings, under Accounts, you should see your Hotmail newsletter address listed. go on the link that says produce Default. From here on, you can use Gmail as your way to check Hotmail. You actually do not need to login to Hotmail any more to read mail, you can use your Gmail detail as the web-based way to check Hotmail.
Now how to access from iPhone: On the iPhone, go to Settings and soon after Mail. Delete any previous attempts you’ve made to assemble a Hotmail detail — these can cause problems with the new explanation you create. Create a new newsletter detail by clicking Add detail. On the next screen, choose Other (don’t pick Gmail). Here are the settings:
- Name: Your Name
- Address: Your current hotmail.com mail address
- Description: (can be anything) “hotmail”
- Incoming Mail Server:
- HostName: imap.gmail.com
- UserName: yournewaddress@gmail.com
- Password: the password for that gmail account
- Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
- UserName: yournewaddress@gmail.com
- Password: the password for that gmail account
- All other settings should match the defaults.
Send yourself a analysis note to your Hotmail explanation from another explanation. Give it a few minutes, and it should soon after show on your iPhone.

Followed directions, and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
This definitely works for the 3G iPhone but there are a couple of things to be aware of when trying to enter the config. I’ve written a detailed explanation here:

Hope it helps
followed the instr. and it worked…thank you so much
It doesn’t work for me because hotmail won’t forward into anything that is not a hotmail/msn/live.com account. How did everyone get it to forward to gmail? I have followed all of the instructions up until that point. Please help us!
this doesn’t work, i am just going to manually forward the mail, i have set up a gmail account, why not use it
It will only forward to a gmail account if you upgrade your hotmail account to a premium one. £10 approx
The instructions are quite detailed and complex, I found, but if you follow them absolutely they work. I have just received my first two hotmail e-mails, forwarded to my i-Phone 3G.
This did work for my MSN acct. I followed dirctions step by step and everything works perfectly! Thanks
Here is an option:

Ok so I followed everything and it works when using it from GMAIL itself…However, when using Apple Mail, which you said would also work, yes, i get the forwards, but when responding my gmail account is what is in the “from” field…NOT my MSN email, which is what I would like it to do…Any help??
Confirmed… working with iPhone 2G 2.1
I followed the instructions and was able to access my hotmail emails from the iphone. However, when I reply to emails, it comes from my gmail address rather than my hotmail address. Is there a way to make it so it comes from my hotmail address as well?
EXCELLENT!!!
It works!
What I’ve been waiting for all this while!!
Thx guys!!
Hotmail Plus for $20/year works just fine on iphone
People still use Hotmail??
People claiming they have followed above tutorial , is either not sure what they are talking about, or they really CAN forward hotmail accounts to any other emal than hotmail, msn or live.
Which I really doubt.
I tried to forward emails from my hotmail to the gmail and it would give you an error saying “You’re only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again. ”
but there is a way of getting your hotmail emails from GMAIL side of configuration. Check in Gmails Settings>Accounts>Get mail from other accounts.
