Apple revolutionized desktop search by introducing Spotlight alongside the release of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. It was an advanced way to find notes quickly and easily even turning up search results instantaneously. However Spotlight continues to be a demanded feature of the iPhone yet it would be entirely useless, for now.

whether Apple were to implement such a system I have no doubt its core feature would remain such but its practicality would be heavily limited. The only possible applications would be searching Mail and Contacts which surely is not at the top of Apple’s To Do list.

What would invent Spotlight more useful on the iPhone would be the addition of an optimized file browser and disk mode which would allow users to sync documents by.

Until that can happen don’t hold your hopes up for Spotlight search on the iPhone even though TUAW reports that references to the popular searching utility have been found within the system files.

that isn’t your run of the mill rumor but actual references on the iPhone itself that Spotlight is being considered for the device. I wouldn’t be surprised whether that was pushed as a combined update after Leopard to take advantage of the OS’s new and updated Spotlight support.

But thereupon again we don’t know the exact version of OS X on the iPhone, it could be 10.4 or even 10.5, my guess is the later whether Apple’s claims of needing more developers was true.
