T-Mobile is getting in on the iPhone Track. T-Mobile Germany is now releasing unlocked iPhones. It is even possible to get an unlocked iPhone without signing up with T-Mobile, and as announced on November 21, 2007, T-Mobile will be selling iPhones without a contract or SIM.

Since it’s launch in Germany T-Mobile Germany has been selling the iPhone with a 399 euro price tag and a lock in period of 2 years. This was done after months of testing and seeing that T-Mobile was the only wireless subscriber in Germany capable of handling the features on the iPhone.

T-Mobile’s policy was contested by Vodafone and they filed a case against T-Mobile because Vodafone believed that T-Mobile’s policy of marketing the iPhone on a contract was against German Law. As a result, T-Mobile was served a temporary injunction and was informed by the judge that they had until the 21st of November to change their policies regarding the sale of the iPhone.

T-Mobile Germany has said that they will contest the injunction, but until the case is reviewed a couple of weeks from now, T-Mobile has no choice but to comply. That is why early today (November 21, 2007) T-Mobile announced

in a press conference that they will be selling unlocked iPhones for 999 Euros (713 British pounds or under $1,500).

That price is pretty hefty, but for iPhone users it is fairly reasonable since having an iPhone unlocked will set them back a cool 600 Euros – as a result, T-Mobile unlocked iPhones may even be a bargain.

T-Mobile Germany has stated that the sale of unlocked iPhones would only last until the proper legal action is taken – in short, this may be a temporary thing. So, if you are in Germany, you can get yourself an unlocked iPhone from T-Mobile. If you already have a locked iPhone, T-Mobile Germany provides unlocking services for around 600 Euros.

If you bought your T-Mobile iPhone after the 19th November then T-Mobile will provide a free unlock code if you have taken out a contract.

For those people who are satisfied with T-Mobile Germany’s service, don’t worry. The iPhone is still available for 399 Euros with a 2 year lock in contact. It is still unclear how the court decides after the case is reviewed. For now, it is best if you get unlocked iPhones when you still can.
