Poor Greg didn’t know what he was getting into when he penned a blog post a while back called, The iPhone is One Right Puerto Ricans Don’t Have. 153 comments later the piece still gets a lot of energetic posts.
Well, we at iPhone Matters take your questions and concerns seriously. So seriously that I just got back from a 5 day visit to Puerto Rico. Ok, that is a lie. Not the being in Puerto Rico part. Rather the supposition that I was there just for iPhone Matters. So happens, by coincidence my wife and I were on vacation there. And, of course. I had my iPhone with me. So, without any further delay, or obfuscation, here is my iPhone in Puerto Rico report.
Hour 0: Landing
As soon as the plane lands and is at the gate I turn my iPhone on. Within seconds I have full bars and the edge network. Nice! I plus have a visual voicemail that works perfectly. Puerto Rico is lookin’ good.
Hour 1: Baggage Claim
I sneak in a quick SMS to Greg letting him know the iPhone is working fine. I take in right back from him. Check off SMS.
Hour 12: The Hotel Room
OK, I haven’t checked my newsletter yet but I give it another whirl from where we are staying about an hour east of San Juan. Edge network works fine from the hotel. that thing is working fine
Hour 36: The Hotel Lobby
Holy Moly, my first other iPhone siting! Hard to tell whether he is a tourist or not. Probably, seeing as he looks like a guest in the hotel. Its in a case (can’t tell which one). But his telltale finger flicking is a certain sign that he is using an iPhone.
Hour 58: Avis Car Rental Lady
OK, I swear that is true. We decide to rent
Cool, my first in the flesh Puerto Rican iPhone user! She still charges additional for the mid-size even though they don’t have a smaller car and asks whether we want supplemental insurance.
Hour 62: Rain Forest
High up in the beautiful rain forests of Puerto Rico I sneak a look at my iPhone. No Edge, no network. But that is the rain forest folks!
Hour 66: Old San Juan
Old San Juan is beautiful. Much larger than I thought, and my iPhone had reception everywhere.
Conclusion:
Yes, I had to visit the beautiful island of Puerto Rico for that report, eating wonderful food, drinking countless Mojito, and sunning on the beach. But the best news? The iPhone worked just as it does on the Mainland, visual voicemail and all. One caveat, I didn’t research the roaming rates, I assumed they were domestic. But whether I’m wrong don’t be surprised whether you see a demand for paypal donations on that site sometime soon!

Is your report for tourists only? If you lived in PR, you could not buy an iPhone here, nor legally enroll with AT&T with a Puerto Rico area code. That’s the point and the complaint of residents. We know it works here!!
We have not only EDGE but now we have 3G! So then… why does AT&T NOT sell the iPhone here in Puerto Rico? We are all sad and many many people are waiting for the iPhone to come out to either renew or change networks! You have no idea how desperate we are over here man!
So I just went to the apple home page and browsed through the countries hoping that I might see puerto rico somewhere..but I didn’t. Something that I did see Is that Dominican Republic is getting the iphone 3g anytime soon! what??!! That’s the country right beside us! I don’t know much about what they have in technology..but I don’t think its more than what puerto rico has.. why them and not us? oh..and jamaica is getting the iphone too. why are they doing this? They have a lot of apple customers here in puerto rico..loyal to apple..

If you are an existing AT&T customer, just get someone to buy the phone for you in the U.S., they connect it w/your phone # and send it to you…. Done Deal. It does work, b/c it worked for me.
This will contribute that Puertorricans hack their iPhones instead of buying it from Apple ot ATT, I think ATT is loosing sales with this, I think is nonesense. Apple or ATT are not giving a good reason for not to sell iphones in Puerto Rico, thats not fair!!!!!
First, R. santiago, yes you can legally enroll your iPhone with your Puerto Rico phone number, I did and its perfectly fine with AT&T.
Second, Puerto Rico has far better 3G network that Dominican Republic, actually it has far better 3G network than a lot of States in the US.
Third, yes it is unfortunate that Puerto Rico is not on the list for future iPhone available countries, but for “Breaking News”, apparently Apple has given AT&T Puerto Rico to sell the iPhone. This is still an unconfirmed rumor, but, at the same time, it is confirmed, keeping my contacts to myself, off course.
