Tip: How to get SMS delivery reports on an iPhone

I love the way the iPhone stores your SMS text messages as chat sessions and it’s a great way to read all your old messages in context but one thing I have always thought was seriously lacking was the ability to get delivery confirmation reports on your iPhone.

Well now I can. To get delivery confirmation reports sent to your iPhone simply add *0# to the beginning of your text message and once the SMS message has been delivered you will get a text message back saying:

Message for +(number) has been delivered on (date and time).

The recipient of your text message won’t see the *0# part of your message as this is stripped out by the network.

This is confirmed working on O2 and T Mobile in the UK.

Let us know if it works for you.

I’m using iPhone on Orange UK and the code to get delivery reports is “RCT ” (that’s case sensitive with a space after the 3 letters). Also, you get charger 1p per delivery and the recipient of your text will be able to see the “RCT ” in the text. How strange!

The best method, but the touchiest is sending an AT command on baseband to set the parameter. This will appear in the SMS header and ask the status report to SMS-C

AT +CSMP=33 seems the good one. (not tested by the way)

Hah, this is really funny… what is supposed to be the coolest phone on earth doesnt support one of the most basic GSM features that even my oldest Sagem used to support.

Btw, these codes are totally SMSC specific and if your operator doesnt have an SMSC which supports delivery receipts through prefixes in text messages (which btw is a prehistoric feature before standard delivery receipts were introduced) you have to live without delivery receipts.

Are they going to introduce it in the iPhone 3G?

Ask your mobile provider. They should have customer care e-mail or number on their site, ask them what is the code to get sms delivery report, they should know for sure, they provide you with the service.

I just phoned yesterday go mobile on of Malta’s carrier and when I told them about the code the customer care told me….what is this thing? they also said that delivery report must be an option from the settings…So I said is there any possibility that not every carrier has this specific code? It’s the numbber zero and goes before ur message in the message box. Tried it by sending message to my PAYG Voda mobile. You should recieve a delivery report below the message you sent in the contacts chat pane. I recieve the report almost seconds after sending and on my trial I recieved the report a few seconds before the message came through on my Voda. How do you type *N# on iphone, it is part of contact number that you store with name. ie. first u pick name and then add *N# BEFORE THE NUMBER. I CANT TYPE THESE 3 LETTERS , ANY IDEA WHICH KEY TO PRESS .

just migrated from my totally robust nokia to iphone and no delivery report – i need to know if my message was delivered. anyway vodafone malta could not solve the problem but 1 expert friend of mine told me : you need to have a prefix *!# and once you send a message you receive ‘delivery report succeeded’ if delivered. no need to jailbreak , no need to purchase 3rd party software -
