TomTom iPhone kit being sold in stores – unboxing details

A member of MacRumors forum has reported buying and unboxing the TomTom GPS Car Kit for the iPhone, and MacRumors was nice enough to post about the experience. The kit has been delayed a few weeks, but is now being shipped to stores apparently.

Also found within the car kit packaging was a paper insert describing a forthcoming free TomTom iPhone application that will allow users to administer some of the technical functions of the car kit without the need for the TomTom navigation iPhone application, which is sold separately. It is possible that this free application will enable the use of third-party GPS applications with the kit, allowing them to take advantage of the kit’s built-in GPS receiver and other features.

    £100 is way too much!! Plus another £60 for the app. TomTom are having a laugh!

    There is a demo on the iPhone car kit from Tom Tom, it looks pretty cool.

    Tomtom just released an update to its iphone app (version 1.1). The update apparently cures the positional lag observed on the previous version. I tested it briefly today and it does what they claim: positioning is much more accurate than before though the gps signal (and hence vehicle position) is lost very quickly when surrounded by tall buildings. All in all a step in the right direction for tomtom.

    i WAS going to buy the car kit… but not at that price!!
    i really can’t believe that they’re seriously charging that!

    when the app was released, the price was going to be £100(ish) for both, so i guessed (wrongly) that the car kit would be around £40.
