In a very interesting twist, Apple has made an unlocked version of the iPhone 3G available in Hong Kong, letting consumers pick whichever carrier they so choose.

3G iPhone

This is in sharp contrast to Apple’s policy for the almost everywhere else on the planet. Unlocked iPhones are rampant worldwide, but that isn’t something that Apple has sanctioned until now.

As most informed people know, Freedom doesn’t come cheap, and this is especially true in this case. The 8GB version is

available for about $695 (5,400 Hong Kong dollars), while the 16GB iPhone costs about $798 (6,200 HK dollars), according to Apple’s site.

The “iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier,” the site states. “Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.”

Flexbility and options! Imagine that. Who knows if this will ever be an option in other territories, but here’s to wishing.

The most interesting point is that Hong Kong, of all places, probably already sells black market iPhones unlocked. It is nice to know that Apple has it in them to provide some freedom somewhere. I think it is time the U.S. becomes the ’squeaky wheel.’

You could buy unlocked iphones here in HK but the price was 8500hk (1097 US) for a 16GB and 6800 ( 874 US). But its good to know thats in the past tense now as they will have to reduce there prices to compete with the apple online store.

Although the prices are expensive from the apple store. It is worth considering that we probably have one the cheapest phone tarrifs in the world.
I have a PCCW account and I pay 100HK ( 11US per month + 1.5US for go government tax) for 1400 basic mins+900 intra mins per month. SMS costs 60cents hk per message.
The competition is fierce as there are about 8 providers which keeps the price very low.

So overall it probably works out alot cheaper in the long run if you did pay the high price for the iphone.
