Verizon states they aren’t concerned about the iPhone, instead await the next iPhone challenger

Verizon has told the world know that it doesn’t really care about the iPhone being exclusive to AT&T, stating that “Exclusivity arrangements promote competition and innovation in device development and design.”

Verizon

The statement was made in a letter announcing Verizon’s plans to allow smaller carriers (with 500,000 customers or less) to get exclusive Verizon phones six months after they’re released.

Although Verizon didn’t come right out and say it, reading between the lines you get the impression that Verizon would rather hold out for the next “iPhone killer” than take the iPhone from AT&T.

This is odd given the fact Verizon doesn’t really have a “killer” smartphone of any kind right now. Mainly this seems like posturing and free press, given their recent announcement of generosity with their phone line.

With under 500,000 customers, would carriers be interested in that phone? More than likely not (perhaps MetroPCS, but that’s a very different market than something like the iPhone).

I thought of educating you that MetroPCS has over 6 million subs.

I believe that this is a huge mistake. I have been do disappointed with verizon phones. The only thing stopping me right now from dropping the Verizon is the thought that the Iphone was a possibility along with the fact that they offer me a 25% discount on service. Granted they figured out how to work that so its not that much of a savings. I may just end up at att it looks like. I really do like the network that verizon has to offer. I will miss ya verizon…..

FM’s correct. What Verizon’s doing is still keeping phones from carriers who can REALLY have a chance to take some of their market share. The mid-size carriers like MetroPCS, Criket (Leap) and US Cellular all have way more than 500K customers.
