If visual voicemail is the only reason why you want to buy the iPhone, you may want to hang onto your existing smartphone. Eric Zeman from knowledge Week reports that with a bunch of new services, you could be utilizing the same technology on your Windows Mobile device as iPhone users are using.

Action Engine in partnership with Acision have announced Visual Voicemail which will be available “on a variety of Java, BREW, and Windows Mobile handsets”. Although most folks first heard about visual voicemail when Steve Jobs announced the feature for the iPhone, Zeman is quick to point out that that service has been around for awhile with a service from SimulScribe.

Still, there are many advantages to the iPhone’s visual voicemail service.

The first advantage is the ability to still sort and pick each voicemail to listen. The SimulScribe service simply converts your voicemail to text and sends you the text note in an

e mail. But what happens when you want to take in the tone and inflection in the caller’s voice? Well, you can still take in the voicemail the old fashioned way. My personal opinion is that whether someone wanted to send me an mail, they would. They called me for a reason, let’s take in what they had to say. The Action Engine service will supply audio files to listen through your media player.

But the real advantage to Apple iPhone’s visual voicemail, however, is the cost. Visual voicemail is included in the iPhone plan. To take advantage of the SimulScribe service you will have to pay an additional $9.95 for 40 messages and $0.25 for each additional notice. There is currently no info on which devices will be compatible for the Action Engine service or how much it will cost.

Chris, Eric Zeman was making reference to SimulSays beta by SimulScribe, which enables users to sort and pick each voicemail to listen to as well as read their voicemail - a step up from the iPhone’s “visual voicemail”. SimulScribe and Arizona Bay partnered up to develop SimulSays beta for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. SimulSays beta is free; it lets you listen to your voice mail in any order, receive e-mail notifications, archive your messages, and otherwise manage them in a visual way on your smartphone. It also integrates with your cell phone’s address book. To clarify, SimulScribe is the voicemail-to-text automated transcription service that lets you read your voice mail messages as text. SimulScribe costs $9.99 per month, plus $0.25 per message over 40 for that month. You can integrate SimulSays with SimulScribe to scroll, click, listen and READ your voicemail.
