On Friday the Weather Channel Interactive launched an iPhone optimized application to deliver current weather conditions, forecasts in both hourly and 10 day format, and the crown jewel of a fully interactive map environment for the users of iPhone and iPod touch.

The interactive environment on a mobiel device crushes the previous experiences available to consumers thanks to the full-fledged Safari browser on the iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Pages are made with fade ins which create a fun interactivity for users. To reach the application point your iPhone browser to www.weather.com/iphone. Attempting to view the URL with anything other than a Safari browser will result in a message indicating the need for Safari to view the content.

Louis Gump, vice president of Mobile at The Weather Channel Interactive states “The full-featured Safari browser on iPhone and iPod touch makes surfing the Net on the go even more popular, so we were anxious to introduce a weather application designed specifically for these mobile users.” Imagine controlling the view of a weather map including cloud layers and radar layers as well as animation settings.

Imagine enhanced, interactive radar and satellite maps. Prior to the iPhone this was impossible to manage in the mobile marketplace. The Mobile team at The Weather Channel Interactive have tackled the available power of Safari on the Apple devices with gusto and have provided a must-see experience.

The maps feature is by far the greatest advance for mobile devices with Road, Radar, Aerial, and Hybrid views. All of these are gorgeous and accurate representations and appear crisp and fast over the web. Interestingly it is Microsoft mapping technology behind the delivery of the Weather Channel maps to the Apple devices.

Other unique features of The Weather Channel web application for iPhones include severe weather alerts and the ability to save favorite locations. The severe weather alerts are delivered to the iPhone via email just as they are in other online subscrption features from the Weather Channel.

For users seeking more content, there is a link to The Weather Channel Mobile Web, which will deliver additional weather related information including traffic and airport delays in the WAP version of The Weather Channel.
