So George Hotz, the 17 year old iPhone God scored a type new sports car and 3 8GB iPhones in exchange for the official #2 unlocked iPhone. I know he is amazing and an unlocked iPhone is a good thing to have but was it really worth a make new car and 3 other iPhones? Obviously, the purchaser was out for publicity and who can blame him? that is big news.

But let’s say that you weren’t out for publicity. Let’s say that for one reason or another an unlocked iPhone was so fundamental to you that you would pay a positive amount of money for it. What amount would that be? Disregard the touted, “own a piece of mobile history” angle. A plain

ol’ unlocked iPhone: one in which you wouldn’t have to use AT&T or wait for an official iPhone release in your country or region. Is it worth by 20k? (The estimated value of the said car and 3 phones)

whether I was interested, I wouldn’t pay more than $1100 for it. grade loyalty isn’t worth more than $500 additional for me. I would guess those who live…say…in Vermont (where there is currently no AT&T coverage) may be willing to spend a bit more. And certainly, those in other countries may feel it’s worth an additional chunk of change. But whether you had to put a number on it, what would you pay?
